Learning a second language

Is anyone else here as enthusiastic about learning languages as I am?  I studied a language in college, and now I am living in a country where that language is spoken and slowly but surely working toward fluency.  It's a really interesting and addictive process!  I had a girlfriend here for a few months, and it was a really intense experience to have an entire relationship in another language.  It ended sort of badly, but hitting on girls at bars in another language is cool, too. :lol:

I'm now starting to learn another (third) language, and it's great because having studied one in-depth already I'm sort of starting to refine my process of learning this second one. 

It's like a drug, hearing yourself speak well at-length in another language, and I want to continue to learn languages my whole life.  I was probably inspired by my grandfather, who speaks about six languages perfectly, and a couple other multilingual family members and friends; and from the fact that as a very young child I learned two languages simultaneously (although I've since forgotten the other, non-English one).  Also, as I mentioned before, being able to talk to girls in another language is super-fun.

I also recently read an article saying that people who are bilingual, and speak both languages regularly (i.e. daily or nearly so), tend to retain more of their mental capacities later into life than monolingual people.  It's great brain exercise.

Tell me your stories about language learning.  What are your methods and motivations?  If you haven't started to learn a second language yet, are you interested?  (Even if you are American??  :lol: )

also I agree with that statement that speaking more langages tends to retain more stuff when you get older. I'm bilingual and I'm smarter than all of you guys! :tongue:

I don't like learning languages or anything.

But I feel obligated to learn Spanish since they do not speak English in many pockets of California. :angrykidface:

Yeah, man!  The grammar is way more difficult than Spanish, and some of the pronunciation gives me trouble.  And the way people actually speak - particularly those damn Parisians - is like "Whaaa...?"

I've been studying it for about a month and a half now, and I can converse decently if someone is willing to patronize me by speaking slowly; and I can read and write pretty well.  I really love it, man!  I've been watching a ton of French films and listening to music to try to develop my ear; but I'll have to go live in a francophone area for a while to make the most important steps toward speaking fluently.

Any good language resources?  A Rosetta stone rapidshare or similar would be awesome.

I'm trying to learn French too.  Last time I went to the used book store I got No Exit in French as well as a 1947 copy of the Plague by Camus.  It must have been from the first run of paperbacks which to me is incredibly cool.  So I have the motivation I think, just have been slow getting started.  I keep hoping to find a good online resource but if not I plan on buying the textbook my old school used from amazon for cheap.

Dont learn french until you learn something more important for your life skills. English-spanish. English is obviously the most important to learn. Then spanish.

I did years of spanish.... that was 3 years ago... i should go back. even after so much i cant speak it and have almost forgot it. The only way to really speak and remember is to be around spanish speakers all the time.

Hey, I've never used Rosetta Stone, though I def. hope to try it out, either with French or whatever comes after.  I DL'ed the torrent for Pimsleur French and it's pretty helpful, though not sufficient on its own by a long shot.

If anyone does have the R.S. and can help me acquire it (wink wink), I'd be grateful.
