Anyone ever deal with language barriors?
    #4676437 -

At this restarant where i work my boss hired his sister in law to help with the bussing. Shes cool and she she does her job but she doesnt speak really any english. It makes the job harder sometimes when the resaurant is really busy. I think im gonna learn a little basic spanish it could help out alot.

Anyone ever had to deal with language barriors in work or in day to day life?

I'd learn just enough Spanish to suggest she learn some English if she doesn't want to be bussing tables in America the rest of her life.

shes not gonna be there for that long any way. Shes like 32 but looks like shes in her early 20's and shes never had a job so my boss gave her a job to get some experience.

Ahhh.. 32 and never had a job? That's pretty shrewd.

Good luck learning Spanish if you're really going to. I don't think I'd have the discipline at the current time to put forth energy into learning a new language.

i have spent several months abroad in countries where english is not spoken by everyone. after a while, i figured out some quite interesting ways to order train tickets, ask for directions, or order a meal without speaking a word of the language everyone else was speaking.

so i guess i don't have any specific tips for working with a non-english speaker all day every day other than to say take your time. don't become impatient. just smile a lot and you'll be ok. also, don't be afraid to jump into spanish. there are some great beginner courses online, at about.com for example.

http://spanish.about.com/index.htm?terms=spanish

learning enough of a new language is A LOT easier than most people think it is. you'd be surprised how far 500 words will get you.

good luck,
nonick

im only going to learn a little basic spanish. It wouldnt hurt at all half of the staff speaks mostly spanish with english as a second language. it would be worth the effort i think.

Sometimes I have the problem that if I ask for a Pop people don't know what that is.

one of my jobs was like that. my team of 6 was 5 mexicans, they barely spoke any english except for 1 who was fluent in english. and i barely spoke any spanish. we all got along pretty well though. you get to a point where you understand each other through motions and gestures. sometimes when it was slow, we'd kind of teach each other even though it didn't really feel like teaching...more like telling stories and each of us remembering words used in other stories from days in the past. it got to a point where i'd be chilling with some english dudes at lunch and then i'd hear my mexican name shouted out and knew it was time to go. and joking around got alot more fun. it was wierd to get a joke and be laughing with a bunch of mexicans and all the english guys would be 'what the fuck is so funny!?'
