Conclusions on nothingness
    #14698566 -

Anyone reach any conclusions?

I think that finding some kind of conclusions towards nothingness is a philosophical goal some people may have.

I have concluded that there is nothing to conclude with respect to nothingness.  (pun not intended)

Its simply a definition.  Arbitrarily define what properties a 'thing' must have, the lack of those properties implies nothingness.  Thats it.

as soon as you conceptualize it, you miss it

for that reason it can never be found

then what's there to say?

Nothingness cannot be conceptualized at any level, even after a night of dreamless sleep, you cannot remember what it was like because it was like...well, nothing.

I imagine it is similar, but much more extreme, than trying to get a lifelong blind and deaf person ( An usher-syndrome sufferer for example ) to comprehend a music video through kinesthetic sign language.

I like how the DL puts it in terms of independent nature. Nothing has an independent nature because all things are dependent.

Nothingness is everywhere...even there inbetween the somethingness. That's where our minds can bridge the nothingness into somethingness.

Yeah, as soon as you define nothing, it is no longer nothing, but rather a flase concept.. We trick ourselves severely by believing we can define it, for it is truly indefinite.

nothing is just an idea, a useful mental construct that helps us conceptualize our material world in which such a thing does not truly exist

the only experience we could come close to that represents nothingness could be cessation of our our perceptions after death, and that's only if there's no afterlife

We define it all the times. Like 'nothing' is outside of infinity. Or nothing separates 1/inf and zero, or nothing does hurt me at the moment.
I am more with DieCommie here and just see nothingness as a lack of attributes. Here in this world we come close to see it, when we recognize nothingness as the missing of its main attributes. For example if we see a dried out river-bed, or the nonexisting powerplants in our gardens, or the content of an empty bottle.

Im also going with the 'lack of attributes' interpretation. obviously we never comprehend a total nothingness because in order to comprehend something it must have the attribute of being a thing, being existant. Thus when staring at an absence of things, we create something, the space between/outside of other things.

I think the debate is starting to lean towards actual nothingness vs. the concept of nothingness.

If you are talking about actual nothingness, than no conclusions can be made because there is nothing to conclude about.

If we are talking about the concept of nothingness then you can conclude things about the role of the concept in human perception and the way we use it to comprehend or map out the universe.

A problem here is that it is hard to define 'actual nothingness' without using the 'concept of nothingness'. It is a sort of similar problem as when talking about consciousness - one has to have a coherent objective concept to talk about but in the end the thing you are talking about is rather different from the concept
