Im watching Campus PD. its a show i just discovered and it makes me angry. It is so pathetic how much they abuse there powers. She pulls over cuz a 19yo was drinking. Then the girl runs and she corners the chick. Then threatens to taze her if she runs anymore.. like wtf?

Then the female cop continues to say you shouldnt be drinking! im now getting you for obstruction of justice, public intoxication, drinking under age. and goes down a list.

If that bitch finally caught me id tell her dont be angry for being so out of shape you dumb bitch. Im a 19yo partying at college you fucking dike.

Thats how I first started using Linux.

They did a segment on some software (don't even remember what it was) and they talked about Linux.. I thought.. "WTF is Linux?"

Installed it the next day and haven't really turned back since.

As best I can remember, that was in 2002.

Ok, so you should be able to answer this for me...what the fuck is so awesome about linux? I hear people talking about it but I always get the same "oh man, youd just have to try it." Im not switching my computer over just to find out its awful.

I could never get movies to play right on Linux. they look.. off. dunno how to explain it.  then there's always little things on Windows that I miss on Linux..

I have near limitless customization options. The computer should work the way I want it to.. I shouldn't have to adjust the way I want to work to use a piece of software.

Also, Linux runs better on old hardware and makes new hardware seem faster than ever.

More philosophically, I own 100% of the information on my machine. With closed source software, you never know if/when/how often your personal information is being reported to the creators of that software. I like being in control.



If you are going to try it out there are two things that you need to keep in mind.. LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS. LINUX IS NOT MAC OS X.

If you can accept the fact that they are neither of the other "big two" operating system, and that Linux will not function the same way (because it is different), then you should have no problem.

Once you learn how it works you can do anything you want.

go for it.

Ubuntu is the most popular... i think ranks among the worst distributions (aka versions) though.

I think Linux Mint is a much better distro for new users. its based on Ubuntu so you can still utilize their enormous amount of resources for support. it has a much more "traditional" or logical layout on the desktop. I'm not too crazy about how Ubuntu works these days.

post to the Science & Tech board if you are having issues.. there are a few of us that hang out in there. I work with Linux both at work and at home exclusively.. no Apple or Microsoft products for me. I try to help out new users as much as possible.
