ps3 network hacked??
    #14325772 - 04/20/11 11:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering why I couldn't sign in today... so I went to google for some answers

http://tech2.in.com/news/playstation-3/psn-down-a-day-after-hackers-promise-revenge-on-sony/211062

http://www.disclose.tv/forum/hackers-have-taken-down-the-playstation-network-t48449.html

http://slumz.boxden.com/f453/playstation-network-down-anonymous-hackers-1523025/

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-14-anonymous-biggest-ever-attack-on-sony

there's plenty more where that came from

and I'm prolly gonna get flamed for saying this kinda warms my heart a little bit... assuming this really is the cause of why I can't sign in right now

http://www.gamepur.com/news/3356-anonymous-sony-prepare-biggest-attack-you-have-ever-witnessed.html

Quote:

It is time to show large corporations and governments that the people, as a collective whole, can and will change injustice in society, and we will make a great example out of sony.

Quote:

Hacker group Anonymous decided to lay down the gauntlet and bring their massive power against Sony after the company decided to undertake legal action against George Hotz and the other hackers who found a way through the Playstation 3's security.

The Playstation Network had seen network maintenance and service outages for the rest of the day following those remarks by the powerful and famous hacker group. People were having trouble accessing the servers and network following those remarks, leading many to believe that Anonymous had fulfilled their threat to attack Sony's web domains.

Sony would originally only say that the PSN was undergoing "sporadic maintenance" via Twitter and wouldn't confirm any kind of cyber attack or the presence of Anonymous. Late last night Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media at SCEA, finally issued an official statement regarding the mess on the PSN via the Playstation Blog: "We're aware that some of you have been experiencing intermittent service on PSN today. We're working on finding a solution, and will report back here as soon as it's resolved." They still have yet to acknowledge any kind of cyber attack or Anonymous itself, which may only serve to enrage them even more. They probably want the credit they so obviously deserve.

While there are legal grounds for Sony's actions regarding Hotz, breaker of the iPhone and apparent tech celebrity, and others, Anonymous does have a point. These people are only trying to help out the consumers in a way that big corporations such as Sony would not be able to. Sure they aren't going about it in the best way that'll cause the change they seek, but a revolutions requires a few radicals like these to get it started. They believe that Sony is violating privacy of users, which is the case on the surface, but with shady user agreements and everything like that, Anonymous likely doesn't have a legal leg to stand on and neither do Hotz or his friends. That's just the way it goes, agree with it or not. But as long as they remain anonymous, they're safe. As for Hotz, he can proceed at his own risk.

Here's Anonymous' Statement Regarding the Attacks:

"Congratulations! You are now receiving the attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal actions against fellow internet citizens, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo have been deemed an unforgivable offense against free speech and internet freedom, primary sources of free lulz (and you know how we feel about lulz.)

"You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work. You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target those who seek this information. In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information. Your suppression of this information is motivated by corporate greed and the desire for complete control over the actions of individuals who purchase and use your products, at least when those actions threaten to undermine the corrupt stranglehold you seek to maintain over copywrong, oops, "copyright".

"Your corrupt business practices are indicative of a corporate philosophy that would deny consumers the right to use products they have paid for, and rightfully own, in the manner of their choosing. Perhaps you should alert your customers to the fact that they are apparently only renting your products? In light of this assault on both rights and free expression, Anonymous, the notoriously handsome rulers of the internet, would like to inform you that you have only been "renting" your web domains. Having trodden upon Anonymous' rights, you must now be trodden on.

"If you disagree with the disciplinary actions against your private domains, then we trust you can also understand our motivations for these actions. You own your domains. You paid for them with your own money. Now Anonymous is attacking your private property because we disagree with your actions. And that seems, dare we say it, "wrong." Sound familiar?

"Let Anonymous teach you a few important lessons that your mother forgot: 1. Don't do it to someone else if you don't want it to be done to you. 2. Information is free. 3. We own this. Forever.

"As for the "judges" and complicit legal entities who have enabled these cowards: You are no better than SONY itself in our eyes and remain guilty of undermining the well-being of the populace and subverting your judicial mandate.
"

forever, since sony will never budge because they are trying to stake a claim that its illegal to modify property in anyway since your just "renting" it.

But in all seriousness, the hackers will give up eventually, they will get bored, find a new target, or start getting sued and locked up:shrug:  Plus from what i heard they actually failed the first time they tried this, im not sure whats changed now, i bet its actually maintance, last time all it did was slow the network down.  They are prolly just shutting it down so they can tweek things and speed it up  reguardless its a small price to pay

You can still watch netflix if you have before on your ps3. All you have to do is try to sign in the first time and it starts loading. Then once your queue is loaded just back out of the sign-in thing and watch a movie.

So you have no problem with people enhancing their machines for the sole purpose of stealing copyrighted material...cool story breh.  In the real world their choice to pirate games and/or steal material costs people jobs.  Just because your rich it doesnt mean its ok to steal your sh!t.  I assure you that your perception would be different if it was your sh!t being stolen.  Im not trying to ride Sony's sack...Im just not buying into the "poor me, they are taking measures to keep me from stealing their shit, they are wrong for it

Sony are sueing Geohot for supplying people with a code or some shit that allows people to pirate shit with their PS3, not for telling the public how to just modify it. Which is illegal. I can't remember the full details, but you can find them online.

Anonymous are a bunch of faggots anyway. I hate how the they they're some mysterious freedom fighting group. Those 4chan douches just watch far too much V for Vendetta.

Meh, I'd rather not pay for online and have it down for 2 days than pay every month for the past couple years.  I'm really hoping sony credits all of our accounts with 10 bucks so we can all buy ourselves a nice old school rpg to make up for the downtime.

Wrong Geohot is being sued for creating code that allows custom firmware, but he took it one step further he put in a little bit of security to try and STOP piracy, his whole goal was to bring linux BACK to the ps3 and allow people to use there ps3 to its full potential, kind of like modifying your car or something, it was never for piracy.

and this post is also in reply to the guy above u, it wasn't for piracy, and sony isn't protecting themselves from piracy by doing any of this.  There sueing someone for modding, not for piracy.  And all this modding helped show people how invasive sony is as a company in regards to spying on its customers, as well as how they treat there customers.  Also sony themselves are actually forcing people to commit piracy when they force firmware updates to play games, people who want linux....can't update, which means they can't play games.  And every attempt sony has made to stop any of this has failed, they want piracy to happen, because they are going to use this as reasoning for cloud computing.  There's alot of people who like physical things, there's also alot of people who refuse to pay a monthly fee for anything gaming related. There going to need a good story for forcing this model onto them in hopes of bringing some of them over.

This is also about cutting the middle man out...game rental stores.  This is going to put ALOT of people out of buisness.  This was never about piracy, piracy is just an escapegoat.

He isn't being sued for just modding a PS3. Jailbreaking is not illegal. He's being sued for distributing software and instructions to circumvent the PS3 TPMs and allow the pirating of games. Pirated games are being distributed with these codes as well. So Sony are perfectly able to sue him legally.

no he "jailbroke" the ps3, if he hadn't done what he did, then the ps3 wouldn't be jailbroken would it?  Same thing with the psp, same thing with iphone, ect ect.  You have to unlock it to jailbreak it, thats what everyone has always done, now sony is saying, nope we don't like the law were going to sue u anyway because were rich and want to scare hackers.

But he took it one step further, he put in code specifically to stop people from pirating.  So its up to "others" to break his code, they are the ones pirating....not him.  All the people using the information to pirate, those are the ones breaking the law.  All he did, was unlock the console, thats it.  It can be used for MANY things, including Linux, for him to really be breaking the law you have to prove he did it specifically for pirating, inwhich case everything points to the contrary, so failed argument.

But thats exactly what sony is doing...trying to sue him for jailbreaking, because for starters it makes sony look stupid when people add functions they took away, and then go and add even more functions...for free unleashing the true power of the ps3, the computer...do it all, that it was advertized as.

Meh, I'd rather not pay for online and have it down for 2 days than pay every month for the past couple years.  I'm really hoping sony credits all of our accounts with 10 bucks so we can all buy ourselves a nice old school rpg to make up for the downtime.

Hell yeah man, if we buy into this "Undergoing Maintenance" then they should give some kind of return. Because i refuse bad service!

I think the problem here is people have too much free time on their hands and need jobs. People are going bat shit insane over the ps3  If the system is down over some idiots trying to prove a point they should pay the price. If you don't like the way sony runs their company or network don't buy sony products dumbasses, I don't buy apple products because they are shit

so I posted a bunch of stuff anon said on facebook, pretty much the same speal as one of my posts on here... it was a status update, followed by about 10 comments because i couldn't fit the entire thing in the update... I wake up in the morning, and all of them were mysteriously deleted.

could have been a facebook glitch I guess... but the fact that sony has access to psn members facebook profiles, kinda makes me wonder... not to mention, some of the posts were still there, but only the ones that had nothing really to do with anons' little speech... strange

I should try posting it again, see what happens...

sony is being sued for not telling people soon enough about the security problems, and i can't remember if it was posted in this thread yet but anyone who has used a credit card on the PSN network has most likely had it stolen and sold on the black market....have a great day everyone:smilingpuppy:

if you payed through the psn network somehow they its prolly stolen, if you did it over the web browser your most likely safe, then again sony likes to monitor everything you do on your ps3 so...who knows what they all collected from your system and stored on there servers.

they said awhile ago that PSN will come back in stages
this is stage 1
there is an update/patch
after the update you will be asked to change your password
there is no Store or anything like that but you can play multiplayer

Ladies and gentlemen, your PS3 may technically be able to connect to PlayStation Network now, but we're not through the woods yet -- today, Sony is issuing a mandatory System Update (v3.61) which will prepare your game machine for that magical day when the company actually throws the switch. In the meanwhile, Sony says the update will prompt you to change your PlayStation Network password, which will likely rank among the easiest decisions that you've ever made.

Update: Sony's just announced that a "phased restoration" of PlayStation Network and Qriocity is beginning today, and that online gaming, Music Unlimited, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.TV should rolling out right now in Europe and North America. Watch cool cat Kaz Hirai deliver the good news in a video after the break.

Update 2: Sony's got a map of the US up, and will be lighting up individual states -- check out our more coverage link to get a rough idea of when you'll be able to play. The company also says it plans to have PlayStation Network fully functional by the end of May. PR after the break.

Update 3: The restoration is beginning now: we're seeing Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and California. And would you look at that, the southeast just got its due: Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina have PSN too... and as of 10:18PM PST, you can add Delaware, Pennsylvania, both Virginias, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan to that list.

Update 4: Annnnnd we should all be back. Sleep well, PSN users. By the way, Sony Online Entertainment (the MMO division) has a list of the free goodies you'll get for your inconvenience -- read it at the link below.

Update 5: Sony just flipped the international switch -- PSN's rolling out across the world.
PlayStation 3 system update 3.61 available now, 'phased restoration' of PSN begins today (update)
