I've not used windows on any of my computers now for a few years.. Once you get into it there's no looking back .
Dual booting is the way to go to start with. I'd say ubuntu is a good choice as your first distro as well, cause it supports so much hardware out of the box with minimal configuration.

15 years. You'll finally know what it means to own your computer. Distros like Ubuntu work right outta the box tehse days and are very easy to use. You got nothing to lose except an unstable barely usable computer.

Played with it in the past but never got around to a good dual boot setup. However, I just got a new HDD for my laptop and it's looking good for Fedora & Windows 7.

I dual booted for about a year, because I needed Linux to compile some code I was working on. When I finished with that project, I went back to XP (now Im on 7). I like the concept of Linux, but I dont like using it. Hopefully it gets better in the future.

Been using ubuntu on my laptop that has a crashed hd, and it works great. Love how easy it is to use and the whole appearance of it.

damn dude, My laptop has crashed 3 times and has been broke down for like 6 months up until a week ago; harddrive just replaced. If i had know about Ubuntu earlier, i couldve saved time, money and headache
my graphics card is holding me back right now, but ubuntu is worth further exploration

It's free. It doesn't clog up as badly as Windows does. And for just about anything you might want to do, there's a free application that installs from an online source requiring just a simple mouse click. If something goes awry, you can always mend it without having to reinstall the OS. And everything, EVERYTHING, can be customized or manipulated.
The downside is that most games don't run on Windows. And while many Windows applications can be run using Wine, this is not true for all of them, so some users may want to stick to Windows. But they're rapidly running out of reasons.

Is Linux good with audio? Unless the DAW is linux native or compatible wouldn't running it through an emulator of sorts (which is what wine is?) increase latency and reduce performance? Games and music programs are what keeps me on windows (and price keeps me off a mac..)

a friend of mine uses Ardour on Linux pretty much daily.
he wrote up information on a complete multimedia production environment based on linux. you can check it out here: http://www.slackermedia.info/
its focused on Slackware but should be applicable to any other distro.. one of the many advantages of Slackware.
really great info no matter how you look at it.

yeah... I have a pretty old compaq I wasn't being able to use it with windows anymore... couldn't use internet, everything was blocking, it took me about 50 minutes to transfer a 400 MB file
Got fed up and installed ubuntu solely, works greatly now and I really prefer all in general, from aspect to being so practical.

To be honest, this is the only problem with Linux.
Wine sucks and slows everything down to shit, you can completely forget about playing any games through wine no matter what system you have.
But these days, with 2TB drives as standard, there is nothing stopping you from dual booting and only using windows for your games and audio. Everything else is better in Linux.
