Blueing Gyms
    #14572100 -

I just found these yesterday.

Habitat:

Growing in a woodchip pile with rich soil and decaying wood debris underneath. In park above a small beach in the bay area CA.

Gills:
Orange.

Stem:
Thick, fleshy and firm. Laterally stripped and reticulated with reddish tones.

Cap:
Medium to large, wavy, in-rolled margins on some. Fibrous redder-colored tufts again a scaly orange & yellow background. Slight blue-ish tones present.

Spore print color:
Orange.

Bruising:
Bruises blue.

Scent of the mushroom:
Mushroomey, pleasant.

-------------

These seems to key out to Gymnopolis spectablis, but I thought Gymnopolis ventricosus is the only variety found here (CA).

Maybe something else???

No flash...

Damn how did i miss this one:wow:

Super :congrats: Dubwobble :super::super::cool:

Im shocked there aren't more responses here:shocked:

Id say they DO look more like what i call my BLG's - true big laughers
Those look DAMN thick and meaty - and the features and colors are all consistant features ive found on my WI finds!!!!

Very neat - Check out my sig pic - thats my largest spot of BLG's
they too have the scaly caps ( weather depending ) and they also have the laterally striped stems and the bruising is also VERY consistant to what i find on my BLG's - - - - - - also there is not much of a annulus present on your finds - another thing i find common with the WI BLG's - - - -Very Very cool - - - - - --  --  -- - and ofcourse those are a little sunbleached - but here are two pics of g.luteofolius i have - this first one was found in a pine forest ( full sun )- lone fruit - notice the bright red/magenta on the top of the stem And check out this image from that bag of happyfrog i bought with the cali luteofolius fruiting from within now these ones looked MAD heady and were EXTRA pretty - - - - -
We gotta get some of the microscopy wizards to start doing workups on our gyms folks:hotidea: i have 4 different types - 5 if you include the store bought luteofolius - --  with enough info compiled we could start our own literature :hotidea::hotidea:

Great finds man - go get some habitat pics and pics of little ones!!!
Happy Hunting!!!

Thank you all.

I would never have found these without the info and pics I saw here.

I've been finding all the non-active Gyms for years now (15+ years)

I am stoked to find my first active Gymnopilus species!

Congrats Dubwobble.  It's good to see somebody out there hunting in the late spring in the Bay Area.  Guess, I should get out to some of my favorite woodchip piles to see what is growing.

Can that be a west coast active gym that everyone seems to deny? Let us know how it goes!!!

I challenge you to challenge yourself more! When you feel complacent and ready to hang it up, challenge yourself to get over it! If you fail, don't look at it as you didn't succeed, look at it as you would a rock face you're trying to climb. Stand back, wayyyy back, and look at it and plot another path. If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

They never did much to me other than give me some horrible farts.

How much did you use?  They're weak and they loose their potency quickly ime.

No one denies that they are active and common on the west coast.

Except for the MSSF and Eroid.  MSSF had them tested in a lab and got a false negative which was reported on Erowid.

I was unaware of that.

That being known, I'll have to look for them next time I'm near fallen logs. I believe they're listed in Idaho.  Those are definitely a pretty mushroom, especially the more reddish ones.

Probably have to head to central Idaho tho, a little less deserty
