I found another new log this morning. I'm pretty sure these are actually G. spectabilis; they are quite a bit larger than the other Gyms I've been finding lately.

There was another large cluster on a stump a few feet away from this one. I'll post close-ups of these when i get another 400k. This log was on the top of a hill that was two hills away from a large lake in eastern Ohio. It was my first time hunting in that location, and it took me about three hours to find the Gyms. They were too far gone to be useful, so I let then be except for the few I picked to photograph. I tore those ones apart and placed them over holes in nearby logs to drop spores there.
Later this afternoon I stopped by one of my favorite spots and found that it had completely exploded! I collected these.
I took a few habitat photos and will be posting them tomorrow. Here's one of them.
This is the first Gym log I ever found. Its covered in wild rose bushes and sits about twenty feet from the trail head at a state park in Ohio. I found it last year in June. I couldn't believe it because the field guide said Big laughing Gyms were not supposed to fruit until fall. But of course these are Sacred Blue Gyms and they show up earlier in the season. This log is so close to the road that as i was picking them the park police drove by and I waved, I'm sure he had no idea that the woods in his park were full of psychoactive mushrooms. I met some dude and his kid out there today; they were picking chanterelles, nice people. I'm sure he was clueless as well. I have more habitat photos which I will post shortly.
These were growing from a knot hole in a piece of standing dead wood in the same park. You can see the stem has bluegreen tones on the little one.

This log is also from the same park. The difference in color is due to natural lighting; the other photos were taken with a flash. This is closer to how they really look in shaded areas of the woods where I usually find them.
Oh, Nofind Um, Its been in the low sixties at night lately, and into the 80's on sunny days, lots of rain the last couple of weeks. I don't know the elevation; all the hills are short here, a ten minute walk to the top.

Those are some sweet pics....been looking for gyms haven't found any yet, I'm right around the kent area of ohio, lots of wooded area where I live, so I'm hopin to find loads soon.

are the same around here..Rhode Island
but none of my spot
have shown any sign of pins yet...

Amazing pictures..the third one particularly IMO...such an eye-catcher.
I'm not sure what is it about them, but i find gyms to be truly beautiful, great work.

Spectabilus are out here I'm alsomst positive- wasn't what I'vef ound either till yesterday- then I went to a state park here right down the road (what a coincidence!) and found some mushrooms fruiting at the base of a stump- upon closer inspection- I narrowed the immature specimens down to being gyms- now here's the clincher- it was a pine, and I'm in NC....you dig? Fucking weird, huh? At any rate- I'm almost to the point of thread jacking so I'll close with what I origionally intended to say- nice pics- I've been to some of the major lake spots in Ohio and they are rich and beautiful. Have fun with those.

I found two small Gyms fruiting from a hemlock log in a park south of Columbus OH 3 years ago. I'm sure it was hemlock because there were hemlock varnish shelves growing from the other end of the log. I was hiking with my mom and dad and my mom said "What are those orange ones there?" They were the first ones I ever saw; I spent the rest of that season looking on Hemlocks with no success. All the gyms above were found growing in hardwood forests. That one log with pins from Summersville WV was found in a mixed hemlock/hardwood forest; it was just a short piece that had been cut with a chainsaw and it was covered with moss so i don't know what kind of wood it was. But yeah superblingtheory, its weird to find them on pine.
