Slug Help
    #14237120 -

Last year I had my first veggie garden. All was peachy except my melon patches. I lost every single one to slugs.

I tried beer traps, coffee ground perimeters, and commersh slug pellets. Still melonless.

Id love to hear your slug repellent teks, tips, or torture techniques!

Copper tape. Hmm. I guess they dont like crawling over it? A trellus (damn. how DO you spell it?) wouldnt work for watermelons, I dont think. Id have to build little shelves to hold all the fruits!(Im already babying my Atlantic Giant pumpkins enough!)

The copper tape is intriging. Anyone had good results w/ it???

I think the most effective thing that I have done, is just go out every night with a flashlight and search for slugs/snails and dispose of them.  Doing this for a week or so seems to get them down to reasonable levels (there is a lot of them here).

Also I've had pretty good success with those slug/snail Iron phosphate pellets.  They are non-toxic so they can me used around pets and other animals.

It's spelled trellis

Have you tried the cornmeal idea from this link ^ ?

use a wood board placed on the ground, in the daytime overturn it and squash the buggers.
http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/pests/1999092022020439.html
That makes sense, they'll hide under it in the daytime and they'll be easy to find.

The wiki link had some good tips. There was one that said to use a propane weed burner and burn em up. TIP* Dont burn slug when on garden plant.
Thats a GREAT tip, lol!
But those "Wives tale" type tips are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks shroomerette!

Cooper works.  I have used slug shields which are made to protect individual plants for the whole season without any maintenance.  These things are great.  Also 100% non-toxic.

How wide must the copper strip be? Where does a guy find long thin strips of copper? Do they purpose make it for slugs? Im very interested in giving it a try. Organic is the way to go whenever possible!! At least for my belly!

I have been using some old copper pipe (3/8 diameter) around a couple of plants that where under attack from snails. The plants are in pots so I made a ring out of the tube and just laid it on the soil inside the pot. I regularly check to make sure no leaves or debris has fallen on the pipe.
The plants have now had the copper ring for about 12 months and for the first time they are growing with very little problem from snails.
This winter I will be doing more pots with copper rings. The only thing with this pipe is it must be kept free of debris and it is only suited to certain plants and pots.

Cheers
Got

A horticultural supply store should have a roll of tape in stock. It is purpose made for the job and is around an inch wide.
