And by even more expensive.. he means astro-fucking-nomical
plus in those places you are far as fuck from the rest of LA/OC.. way in the south
I'd stay near the northern beaches if anything. Laguna is nice but fuck if I can afford 4k in rent. Nice beaches to visit though.

edit: Oh I just find OC in general to be very "upper class suburby".. take Irvine for example.
I mean some people love it.. I like my cities to have a little bit of character, instead of endless strip malls and identical houses.
Some parts of OC are pretty much the exact definition of middle-upper class suburbia. It's the shit you saw in all the movies.

Yeah, the first cities I recommended also have beach communities in them and still have the whole beach vibe.
I would definitely keep them on your list.

Newport is going to be the most expensive out of them...
But with some bargain hunting, you might be able to find a good deal somewhere in OC.

Shroomism is right though. Once you get into south OC and Irvine...
It's pretty much cookie cutter suburbia for rich families to raise their kids.

no your right that's not what I want. Fake ass plastic people living in identical houses, drinking the same coffee, and always worrying about "the children".  makes me wanna:scat:

If it were me I would avoid OC altogether, Culver city, Burbank and Pasadena.  Just my opinion but I think the vibe in these ares are kinda yuppieish/douchey, lack the urban atmosphere I like, and they are expensive too.  I like Koreatown/hollywood/ echo park areas personally...but if the beach is what your looking for try out venice/ del mar/ or palms area.  Reasonable rents around there, low crime and 10 minutes to the beach.  And trying to get out of the valley day in and day out is pretty annoying.  Cool people and cheap rent in the valley, it just takes an hour to get to anywhere in LA when you are in the valley.  The traffic will destroy your soul.  I don't know what all this 30 minute talk is unless its 1 AM.

Ya the 405 and the 110 freeways are a nightmare.  They probably cause dozens of suicides a year!

That why you gotta go 50 mph down the residential streets...

Ill agree with this except for the knock about Culver City.  You like Silverlake area but find Culver City yuppieish?  Culver City is up and coming in terms of a hip place to live, it has a lot going on art wise.  Maybe its no echo park yet, but its a tight place I think. Personally I would choose somewhere in Hollywood or the Venice area.

The show Californication is filmed in Venice

Oh and personally I wouldn't live in Long Beach.  Its too far from most of what I like about LA and frankly Im just not into it too much in general.  Though I haven't been there too often to be fair.

That is a fair point and I do find silver lake/echo park yuppish sometimes, I guess I've had better luck with people there and I personally hang out there more often.... I work in culver city alot and deal with alot of homeowners/renters in culver city and had lots of bad encounters there.  Not to mention the culver city cops are out of control, like the worst in la county, they will give you a jaywalking ticket in culver city.  Not like the good ol' absentee LAPD.

Whatev though, I agree Venice is the place to be on the westside.  I would suggest to OP to zero in on venice blvd at the beach and go east until he finds his price range.  And ya Long beach is cool n all, but its kinda out there.  Your not really gonna make it up to LA very often, but maybe that is the point???

I mean Id rather live there also, but Culver City is becoming a really hip area.

Not all of it of course, but it has a large artist population now with little galleries.  As for jaywalking, unfortunately the LAPD is ridiculous with that shit.  Ive seen someone get a ticket in downtown, its just easy money for the cops as they are cash strapped.  But can you imagine if the cops starting giving out jaywalking tickets in a city like New York?  I dont know why LA puts up with it, they recently raised the fine too.

ok that sound fucking awesome! well sorta anyway; cheap rent, cool cliffs, cops don't bother you, and 25 bucks for an 1/8 is like a dream. BUT i fucking hate college towns, maybe people are different out there. But here, large groups of college kids just destroy our town. They come in with all sorts of drugs(bad narcotics), drive around drunk, and commit all sorts of crime.

I went to Venice yesterday!

pretty fun, my buddy went to the clinic, I got a new pipe. Sat on the beach checking out all the art/artist.

He also set up an appt for a tattoo this Thursday.

Rent is going to be expensive within a mile of the beach, But fight minutes inland is extremely doable. my and my dad pay 1500 right now for a 4 bd 2 bath, and I live in a back separate house (Im ready to move out, just waiting to get hired)

I lived in Venice like a half a block from the beach my first year in LA... loved the area.
Very chill and laid back, lots of artists and a good community.. car is not an absolute necessity there but it does help.
Rent isn't super ridiculous there unless you are literally on the boardwalk

ok so I've been quite busy the past two weeks, seems like everything happened at once. But anyway, I've been talking to my buddy and have slowly been telling him about norcal. We have both spent hours looking for housing in socal and it's just so damn expensive. Not everywhere, and I have found a few good deals but it's disheartening to repeatedly find way overpriced places to live.

That combined with needing to be near his work, has gotten me four more towns; Bakersfeild, Fontana, Rialto, and Woodland.

Every night I go to bed thinking about cali, and everyday at my stupid fucking job I think about cali. Every time my boss pisses me off I think, well it's only a matter of time till cali. i imagine the Hollywood sign, the redwood trees, the salty air, the  beautiful mountains. I want it all....California here I come!

no no no no no . RP dont go to central valley. do not.

either go to santa cruz (pricey), santa barabara (pricer) , chico (cheap!chill as fuck!), humboldt  (sooo chill! cheap) or san louis obispo.

serious you will not regret moving to norcal. you and a buddy could easily get a 2 bedroom for 600-800 total.
