If i were you, I'd go to one of the beaches like Santa Monica or Malibu, or somewhere like Santa Barbara, San Diego, or San Fransisco. Those are all the coolest areas.

I'm born and raised in southern California, having also lived in Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, and regularly driving through the entire state to visit family in Oregon, as well as spending time visiting the deserts and mountains not limited to Death Valley and Yosemite.  There's a lot here, but as Shroomism noted, a car is extremely useful and you will have to learn to deal with some gnarly traffic in the cities.

As for the San Fernando valley, it generally doesn't offer the same fervency as the aforementioned neighborhoods.. Echo park, Silverlake, Hollywood/West Hollywood, Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City, Hermosa & Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, maybe even Pasadena or Burbank if you end up staying inland.

The problem I have with the San Fernando valley is the sprawling nature of the communities that often lacks a central feel.  One community bleeds into the next without any real personalization, lots of apartment housing, a sizable lower income immigrant population, just generally not a very exciting place to be.

Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz are both exceptionally beautiful if you don't mind heading north.  San Diego is also a wonderful place.

Yeah that's what I figured with what little I looked at in those areas. It's true there are deals to be had everywhere but I'm somewhat limited because I can't just go drive around looking for "for rent" signs. I have to use the internet and phone calls, as I can only afford one trip out before the move to finalize a location and actually see it.

how are you guy's finding places? What are some local newspapers that I could look up or local rental agencies? Loosely based around LA/OC...

that's not what I want to be around because ime it always leads to trouble. Low income neighborhoods tend to have hire crime and drug abuse rates. not what I want to be around, in fact it's exactly what i am trying to get away from. i want nice beautiful landscapes and decent people, trees beaches mountains I really don't care I just want something beautiful to wake up to everyday.

SF Valley is cool if you like driving 15-20 minutes to just about anything LA has to offer, including ~25-50 awesome hiking spots, downtown, etc. I like it more then anywhere else.

well like I said I always had the desire to move to norcal but my buddy wants socal so bad. and honestly I wanna have that LA experience under my belt. i'm sure after a year or two of the hustle and bustle of LA life that i'll want to slow down but I gotta do it. gotta walk the boardwalk and get a map of the stars homes and eat at an in and out burger joint, do all the cliche shit.

well, i'm slightly south of Santa Barbara and it's expensive here too (not quite as touristy or trendy as SB though but quite a nice area). i just got lucky and have awesome landlords that have kept our rent extremely low for the past 15 years i've been in this house.

I'm not into the "scenes" and all that stupid shit in LA, it's just a nice place to live. I like the weather and the mountains, I could care less about anything else.
