I'm still debating on if I'm going to NE 2005 so I don't know exactly when next year, but this is just a life changer for me.
anyone else here have experience moving in another country? tips?
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

What brought this on?
a lot of things brought this on...and it all seems to come together so well its crazy!
I was already planning on moving around almost a year ago because I was fed up with the way things are in the united states, not to mention the tuition and fees here are atrocious (they were tripled last sept in cali) I couldn't afford it.
so I was discussing this with a fellow shroomerite and I got an offer to stay with him for free while I go to school
so I was like super sweet!
apparently the australian colleges are tha bomb in my major (geology) and actually are cheaper than the colelge here in cali
on top of all this I met this wonderful woman (yes on the net ) and she's happened to be in australia as well.
bush just got re-elected and so I'm pretty sure the winds are tellign me to go south

I've actually considered this myself. My dad has a friend in Australia who's a TV producer, and he may or may not be able to find some work for me over there. If it works out, I'd love to go down there and visit you, as well as hanky & grizz, Merkaba, and any other Aussie Shroomerites.

I wouldn't use Bush's re-election as a reason to move to Australia. John Howard is equally cretinous and as we don't have maximum term limits, he may yet end up becoming our longest-serving Prime Minister. But then I'm completely unashamed about my Green streak, so take that as you will.
It's probably an excessive generalisation to say that we have "killer bud" (it's a big country; you'll find the same disparity in quality as you will over there), but if you're so inclined I recommend a trip or eight to Nimbin, a small and altogether rather amicable town near Byron Bay (northern New South Wales).
As for the university issue, the Howard government recently raised fees by 25%. Some universities (including mine, ANU) have defied this trend, but I wouldn't expect that to continue for very long. Nonetheless, I dare say we have a very strong tertiary education system despite Howard's best efforts.
Some consider Canberra, our national capital, to be a bit of a backwater (the site of its construction was politically expedient, not wise), but I think it's a lovely little city (est. 320,000 people). And a certain species of mushroom is said to grow in the Botanical Gardens. Ahem. Anyway, which city will you move to?
Just my $0.02 on the above. "Welcome" in advance. Now I'm going to take the wallaby on walkabout.

Depending on your age and qualifications as to whether you can get citizenship or not from what I know. Lovelight and Merkaba would be better versed in that. However from what I can gather its relatively easy to get NZ citizenship - then you can live in Australia on that indefinately.
I don't know much about Canada and Brazil to draw comparisons as to why one would be better than the other.
What I can tell you about Australia is that it is a laid back kinda place, very diverse landscapes, quite multicultural etc. it's not a pretentious place as a whole, good weather. I dunno - what else do you want to know?

good information already..
Well, basicly the general society... Is pollution a major issue? How liberal or conservative is the majority? What are some of the stupid laws including drug ones? Do you have good law enforcement or corrupted? any shrooms besides subs? How easy is it to get a job the=re, etc

Pollution is not a major issue.
Do you mean liberal/conservative as in politics. I only ask as you guys have different names for parties there and I don't know if that is what you mean or not.
Drug laws are WAY more laid back than USA. You guys have some scary freakin laws.
Law Enforcement is probably 50/50 I guess.
Talk to Hanky about shroomage - I'd have no idea.
Employment - it depends on what you want to do. In our state - unemployment is at its lowest since way back.

congrats on your decision to move...i moved from the US coming to now 7 years ago and I don't regret it at all...
just a few questions though...you said you're going to university have you gotten your student visa sorted out? i'm not sure how it's like for australia but when i went to the UK for uni i had to show that i was self sustainable (bank letter from the US showing i had money for tuition + expenses)...cause they won't let you in the country unless you can prove you won't resort to trying to get on the dole...
as for jobs...usually they require a citizen of another country to get a job first then apply for a work permit...but not sure about australia
all the best of luck!

Getting a citizenship is done on a points system i believe. Things that are important are your age (they like em young), qualifications, work history, and whether Australia needs people in your trade at the time you apply, (you speak english so that's a bonus). However, if you managed to study here as an International student (university degrees are around $AUS15,000 per year and diplomas are about half that price), you would have a better chance of being accepted, especially if you complete your course here, or so I've heard. As Grizz mentioned, New Zealand IS easier to get into. You can get their citizenship quite quickly, then move to Australia as a Perminent Resident. However, recently Australia has toughened up on New Zealanders, and are not letting them become citizens very easily. But this wouldn't affect you in many ways at all. You can check if you are eligible here: http://www.migrationexpert.com/ Now I say since all you fine yanks seem so interested in coming here, this year's NE gathering should be moved down under! Then Kaiowas might be able to sleep soundly at night.

Don't come here if you're into salvia. It's illegal here - much harder to get. Mdma pill quality is generally shit and expensive. Cacti supply is limited and bloody expensive ($50 a foot). Need really good contacts to get mushies. Acid is non-existent. Not the best place for mind-expansion.

Ninjapixie, what my brother is trying to say is you might have to make a bit of an effort but that's the case everywhere, and it's worth it! mind expanding isn't served on a silver plate, but it IS grown all around by Mother Nature herself to use at your own leasure! why don't you hunt for shrooms yourself, you don't have to buy them...

Yeah the keyword here is effort. I always wait for an acquaintance to get me shrooms.
I hear some herbal shop will sell you salvia if you get to know them a little (or tell a good story about how much you need it to quit pot).

We just re-elected John Howard (Liberal-National Party Coalition; 'Liberal' in this context refers to economics) for his fourth term. So, you could say we err on the conservative side. Still, the Labor Party (currently under Mark Latham and somewhere between the centre and a tepid kind of liberalism) does occasionally get elected and the Green party (under Senator Bob Brown) is on the rise. The Democrats (more tepid centre-leftists) were virtually annihilated in the last election; they should never have ousted Natasha Stott-Despoja. I'd say One Nation (frightening right-wing isolationists) had ceased to be a threat, but that's not exactly true since John Howard has effectively adopted many of Pauline Hanson's policies regarding social issues such as homosexual rights, immigration and indigenous relations. Our currency is the dollar, and we usually get around $0.70 US for it, although that is naturally subject to fluctuation. Yes, the economy is very stable. Despite my myriad objections to Howard's policies as PM, he has managed to keep the economy strong through the recent global economic slowdown. I'm afraid I can't tell you much about getting citizenship, or what qualifications you'd need. Apologies, but with very brief interruptions I've lived here my entire life. I disagree that MDMA pill quality is uniformly terrible; my experience dictates otherwise. You can expect to pay $30-40 per pill in cities, perhaps $50 in rural areas (steer clear of those in most cases). I haven't done any serious mushroom-hunting here, but there is a fairly diverse array of mushrooms, especially in the Blue Mountains. So that's my summarised response to all the above questions.

So there is acid in Aust? Don't know anyone whos got it.
I very rarely pill nowdays (2-3 a yr) but the last few I have had weren't all that great. Last great pill I had was three years ago! I live in Sydney and I rarely paid more then $25 for a pill. Helps when your best mates a runner. Still we end up paying much more for pills then most other countries.

Thanks Hanky! That's my favourite picture ever!!! YUMMY YUMMY !!! You are so creative in your use of shrooms, you psychedelic artist shaman, you! I'll never forget the mushies dancing with fire either! Thoth this IS all on topic! Showing Kaiowas how spoilt he will be down under. Although before he is allowed to go hunting, he will need to grow himself a large kangaroo-style pouch for storing such lovelies! PS Grizz rocks my socks and now that you are hanging with us pubbers, how long till you start singing the dead ever so gratefully? Grizz =

I've lived in perth and melbourne, never had any problems getting almost anything at anytime, acid can be a pain but it's there if you look for it.
Shrooms aren't popular,i've never heard of dealers selling them but if you are a member of this site why would you need to buy them??? And we are blessed with plenty of wild fungi, not everywhere has the masses of wild shrooms that melbourne has(i even found them in my neighbours front yard last season) but they can be found in all states if you put the effort in.

Marshmallow, read the whole thread! I'm sticking to my story: you don't need a dealer, just a park, some good rain, and voila! Or if you do want a dealer, their numbers are matched by the shrooms grown!

hanky, those picture are totally awesome.. How long do you shroom hunt? I hunt psilocybe Weilii, and I can spend anywhere from 1 hour to 5 on foot before finding anything. yet I got alot of spots I check back once discovered.. Looks like you got some nice spots mapped out.. How many spots you got and how much time did you invest to find them? Shroom hunting is the shit!!!!
