all this talk about gatherings and beautiful beaches, crisp ocean air blowing serenely up the mountain side makes me wanna pack up today and get there!!

I will for sure be going to the gathering:billymaythumbup: What you described is like a perfect weekend. the only thing that would have made it better would be if that hike into the woods up the mountain at 2am had been to see a band play secretly deep in the forest.

seriously though, thanks for all your help so far.

Just like someone else said about the LBC, rent is about average in comparison to everywhere else.  Besides what others had said, the San Fernando Valley is expensive and the more affordable places are in the Barrio!

You might want to look into Lakewood which is the first town North Easy of Long Beach.

SB is so sick though, anyone ever partied on Del Playa? in isla vista?

Attended the University there and lived in IV for a year.  Went to some of those large parties, but honestly I'm less inclined to smash into a house with hundreds of people and a few kegs with sticky floors and the stench of dry beer and sweat.  Hangin' out in smaller groups is more my thing (which you can also certainly find in Santa Barbara)... but the excessively social lifestyle is pretty hard wired into most IV residents.  Which is one of the reasons I transferred to Santa Cruz.  Lower key, cleaner, and just plain awesome.

SF Valley aint that expensive if you look around, find a 3 bedroom for ~1500 if you're lucky.

Pockets of the SF Valley are probably some of the least expensive places to live in LA.  But they're that way for a reason.  Just to clarify, not all of the San Fernando Valley is a bad place to be.  But as noted, there are vast regions of lower income populations that just don't lend themselves to a positive living environment in aggregate.  You also set yourself up to deal with difficult traffic should you like to frequently visit the beach.

Well california's economy is shit so pretty much anywhere is moderately expensive. But ive seen some nice houses that are 20-30 minute drives from the beach that are reasonably priced

Also remember, 20 - 30 minutes to the beach can turn into 60 - 90 minutes to the beach depending on when you're driving.  Case in point, I myself live 30 minutes to the beach on a weekend morning.  But I'd never get there in less than 40 minutes even during the best timed weekday drive, and if I'm within a few hours of rush hour traffic or hit an unexpected accident, fugettaboutit!

One day LA will have the subway to the sea.  Can you imagine how incredible LA would be with a functional and large subway system?  Living on the east coast now Ive gotten used to getting around easily

I can't advocate this for the original poster either.  It's even more difficult to get out to the beaches from here, it's hot, dry, and feels a lot more like a desert than most of Los Angeles.  The population is also generally of lower income which comes with the associated problems of drug abuse and theft.  My family has owned an apartment building out there for twenty years and has to fairly regularly deal with these types of troubles (including at one point a meth lab that some tenants had setup that was ultimately busted and we had to pick up the hazmat cleanup bill!).

Chesperito, a subway would be great.  I've taken the metrolink a few times, but it usually doesn't effectively reach the places I'm looking to go.  Whenever I get the opportunity though, it's a breeze and way better than dealing with driving (not to mention, then I don't have to worry about how much I've drank!).

Yea its not the most useful thing out there.  I grew up in the Valley, and so would take the orange bus line to the North Hollywood subway stop.  From there my friends and I would fuck around Hollywood, or Koreatown generally.  Once you are there you can take taxis around and its pretty great actually.  However the subway closes too early.

Ok so I am not sure where the best place for a thread like this would be. So I figured I'll start it in the pub.

So I have decided to move to southern California in about 5 months. It's gonna be me and my best friend finally making our California dream come true. I know a lot of shroomerites must be cali locals and I want YOUR input. Any advice you have for someone new moving to the area would be awesome. Like what neighborhoods are full of crime and which ones are outrageously overpriced. That sorta thing.

Maybe one of you used a particular landlord/rental company that you either really liked or disliked. Any help with what kind of paperwork I will need to legally reside in that state would be really helpful.

We plan on flying out there for a weekend to visit of few rental locations, so we can get that taken care of BEFORE we move all the way out there with our stuff.

If this is in a bad spot could a mod please help me move it to a more suitable location?
And feel free to send me a :pm: about any of this stuff.

Thanks,:bubbles:

Id recommend San Diego

So It's definitely gonna be somewhere near the LA/OC area, so far here are all the towns you guys have recommended.

Culver City
Silver lake
San Fernando Valley
Santa barbara
Santa clarita*
Santa Monica
Echo park
Silverlake
Hollywood/West Hollywood
Venice
Hermosa & Manhattan Beach
Long Beach
Pasadena*
Burbank*
Long Beach
Lakewood

So of this list, which is growing, what towns can I cross off? I want to be reasonably close to the beaches and not be in a lower income area. i wanna see something beautiful when i look out my window everyday. also can anyone tell me a few local newspapers? trying to expand my search area..

North Long Beach might be your best bet, that's where I am now. (Lakewood)
Rent is affordable, it's pretty nice in most parts, there can be some ghetto-ish areas though, considering Compton and south central is only a hop and a skip away.
But for the most part it's pretty cool and there are some nice spots and tons of good restaurants in LB (although that's true all over LA..)
LBC is good because a Central location so you are an equal distance to anywhere in LA and OC for the most part.
You don't want to go to the beach at Long Beach.. dirty and industrialized.. but anywhere to the north or south is pretty cool, there's Seal Beach right next door, and you can go further south to Huntington or Newport or Dana Point really nice beaches.. then of course if you go north you have Manhattan Beach, Venice and Santa Monica only about 30 mins away.

There's no towns from OC even on there. Represent!

OC rent is ridiculous, but it is much nicer than LA IMHO.
LA's nice to visit, but it's dirty just about everywhere. :P

EDIT: I'll second a Long Beach nod.
It seems to fit your needs well.

shroomism that sounds awesome:thumbup: I'm gonna look hard in that area, it sounds like it's got what I am looking for.

There are no OC towns because no one has recommended any...Got a few in mind perhaps ifoundwaldo?

We were considering moving to OC, just because my girl and I both work there.
Pretty much only places we are considering are Costa Mesa or Tustin.
I'd stay out of Santa Ana/Anaheim unless you want to live in little mexico
Costa Mesa is nice because it's right near the beach (newport) and rent isn't super ridiculous.
But I'm not sure if OC has exactly what you are looking for..

Well, I'd recommend Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa...
Just go down along the coast from Long Beach.

The problem is just finding affordable rest.

South OC is really nice too, but rent's even more expensive.
Places in Laguna, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, San Juan Capistrano..
