sleepy said: buy your own farm for cheap and sell vegetables, that's what i might do. if you buy land that has no house on it and you live in a tent or yurt or build a small house out of Cob http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cob_(material), it's pretty cheap. even if you are at rock bottom as far as being broke with no money, you can go to rainbow gathering, get your head strait, which will help you get a job, and save up money for 1-3 years or however long it takes. to put a downpayment on a 1+ acre of land is only a few thousand dollars in most places, then you gotta pay a few hundred a month until you own the land, but youd be living in nature and just be your own boss. heaven? maybe. some people go on the "rainbow trail" for years, and thats an option too. here's a beautiful piece of land for 35,000, and this is really high end as far as i'm concerned. you can find cheaper land easily http://maine.backpage.com/LandForSale/35000-blueberry-fields-light-forest-some-w-river-front/2560477
my parents might even buy me a farm since i never went to college and a farm would be cheaper than school anyway, and i could never be fired either!
This is a hell of an idea man; I'm going to start looking in to this. Maine isn't really an acceptable location to live outside though unless you have a support structure that can house you through the winter, or you're willing to vacate your property for 3-4 months of the year.
Honestly I think a lot of people could never imagine buying a parcel of land rather than living in a house; but it makes SO much more sense than buying or renting a house. You're purchasing a title deed; an ACTUAL piece of property. Pay your slave fees (taxes) and you always get to keep it; you can grow food or timber, or purchase and care for a few animals. You don't need a HUGE farm anymore to be a successful farmer because of the burgeoning local and organic markets that are gaining market share every year (I strictly drink organic milk and eat cage-free eggs, a change from just last year; I've spent a few hundred on organics in the last year or so).
The only thing that makes this more difficult than in days past is the mountain of legislation that lies between anyone wanting to do anything and the government being able to profit from it by holding a gun to you.
Later on, once you've got the money you can build a simple log cabin and you've got shelter during the cold and wet periods, and the rest of the time you can work; invest in your land. Hell, if you buy the land early enough in the season you could probably build a log cabin within 2-3 months; it can't be THAT hard; chop down some trees, cut some grooves, pay for a little labor to help and then stack them babies up. STraw and mud could be used for insulation between timbers; hell, even better you could purchase some hemp insulation.
