Using rye grain (berries) as a substitute for vermiculite?

My question, for purely hypothetical reasons, is could rye grain (berries) be used as a substitute for vermiculite in: (and if not what would be a good substitute that is easy and accessible to find?)
Substrate jars (where the jar is just water & grain, instead of vermiculite/brown rice flour; plus innoculation)? Would this be a sufficient environment for growth? (Rye Grain method seen on: http://www.shamanshop.net )
And/Or
Casings: For example, the shroomery.org posting for the "Sea of Shrooms" ( http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7976/pag/1 ) The tek says that the first layer should consist of vermiculite followed by substrate and then of course Jiffy Mix. Is it possible for the layer which is supposed to consist of vermiculite be substituted by rye grain (berries)?
Also, I was also very curious as to about perlite and humidification techniques.
-Is a perlite tek or humidification technique (such as: a Ultra Sonic Humidifier Setup: http://www.lycaeum.org/drugs.old/plants/mushrooms/gg/MMGG.HTM#Terrarium ) necessary when dealing with a casing within a terrarium? The terrarium of course being constructed with a Drip Shield and filled with a "Sea of Shrooms" ( http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7976/pag/1 ) casing technique?
That is all I can ponder up as of right now. I'd really appreciate the advice.
