bottom verm layer with rye grain?
    #882290 -

Do you have to put a bottom layer of moist verm on the bottom when you are using rye grain as a substrate? Well I know you don't have to but is it okay?

Personally, I think it's a waste and that it robs you of space that could be filled with a nutritive substrate.  I'm sure others will disagree..

I always pressure cook my casing materials and I don't think I would PC cotton why use cotton when you can use verm? Do you have a lot of it or somethin'? So you think its a waste of time huh, dosen't it provide lots of benefical moisture to the substrate?

This is what the top layer is for. I've tried both and could find no advantages with a bottom layer.

That would be so cool not to have to use it. It would save me so much time, and work, and money. Do you put anything on the bottom? I grew some shitake mushrooms not too long ago with the verm bottom, and it went great.

My trays consist of the substrate with 50/50+ on top. Nothing else.

Good luck!

why cook cotton? it comes from a bag sterile since its used for swabbing your ears or flesh wounds.

heres what I could use.

Lid
OO-------------OO
OO OO
O airtight inside O
O O <-------------46 ounce jar
O O
O 3oz. cup O
O \ / O
O \_____/ O
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

then in the cup, I could fill 10% of the top and bottom with cotton
and the rest of it with pressure cooked rice, let it cook then inject
spores into the rice. will that do?

And what would the point in all that be exactly?

Cotton absorbs way too much water in my opinion and will lead to rot.  Additionally, have you ever seen a wet cotton ball?  It's quite compressed.  Having soaking cotton balls in the bottom of a tray would probably create pretty nasty anaerobic conditions and would probably overhydrate the substrate too.  Don't use cotton.  OK???

If there are 12 year old kids out there doing it without problems, why all the questions? There are some things you just need to figure out by trial and error.

Peace
