They actually planned to land in Virginia and, when realizing their error, wanted to reroute. However, because they needed to prepare for winter (gathering, building, growing, etc.) in either location, they didn't have enough time to correct their mistake.

I heard the pilgrims actually hijacked the mayflower - they were the minority on the ship - to find their own colony and establish their own rules on religion

I remember on a show about the mayflower, apparently 2 little trouble makers almost lit a barrel of fuel on fire. Had they done this, the mayflower would have sunk in the middle of the ocean:eek:
