Mycorhizae
    #13402911 -

Hi all. I've done the searching and I've read about the benefits and it all makes sense, now i have a question about hydroponic mycorhizae: how would you be able to sustain a healthy myco population in a soil-less environment?

My answer is i think to use natural teas: bat guanos and kelp meals; to use plant additives like liquid karma, because it also contains sugars and other vitimins and phytonutrients; and finally to use something like blackstrap molasses, carbo load, honey carbs or something that's simply a carbohydrate source, to keep up the fungi/bacteria's energy source up.

Anything wrong with this you guys think? I've never worked with them, and for me the only carb source i have at the moment is also 10% calcium, so i wouldn't want to overload my plants with calcium by trying to feed the fungi/bacteria.

Sounds like you are on the right path.  I've never tried organic hydro.  Well.....I've tried it using compost tea.  My experiment only lasted a week.  It seems that I've seen others doing organic hydro.  But I think they are using commercial products.  It seemed to me that it was a constant process to keep the liquid alive too.  But I haven't done lots of reading on it.

One idea I've had was to feed like 3 days per week.  And in between feedings you are flushing/feeding just straight water.  I really dunno?

And I'm sure you know all this.  But commercial non-organic fertelizers will kill a living system.  So will most tap water cus of the chlorine.  But chlorine will just evaporate so long as your water supplier hasn't upgraded to the chlorine that won't evaporate.

The OBBT thread I started in the ethnobotanical garden forum gives info on a setup that is an organic soil/hydro way to grow.  I've just started to experiment with it.  But it's been a week and the myco in my experiment is definately thriving.

Well so you're saying that even when I'm using  soil with a mom plant or something and i use a commercial non organic, like i do sometimes when I'm out of foxfarm and the goods, I'm killing the living system in there? That doesn't seem to really make sense to me, it's just raw nutrients, what's in them that's killing the stuff?

At least that's what I've read.

The people who use organics like it's a religion will say this stuff.  I suppose I should of said that I'm only regurgitating what I've read.  It could be the salts that kill the living system?  I really don't know 100%.  So sorry for sounding like I knew for sure what I'm talking about.  I typically give a disclaimer saying my experience level and such, but I forgot to say that I don't have experience killing a living system using commercial ferts.

But I've read it over and again from many who use only organics.

If you're not aware of icmag I'll point ya there.  www.icmag.com/ic <---  LOL.  There's a pretty good forum in there of people who use organics.  There's even an organic hydro forum over there.  I know that site is plant specific.  But the information there is definately worth reading through.

Sorry that I had to swap ya to a diff forum.  But I really don't have the answer to this question.  It's just something I recall from the organic peeps around the net.

Good luck with it.  It sounds like fun.  Heck, plants ARE fun to play with. :-)

please forgive iam some what stoned.
mycorhizae is a fungus that live on/with plant roots one helping the other with water a food. i doubt they can live underwater at all.
Many be ive got the wrong end of the stick here. i used them when i pot up plant that will sit in the same spot for a while. Love to know if this works. What style of hydro system are u going to use this on deep water culture or drip feed with clay pebbles, etc??

Mycorhizae?

Can you enlighten me on what this is, sounds interesting

I could be wrong here but,......

In a nutshell it's a ?fungus? that lives in the soil.  It will for a symbiotic relationship with the roots of a plant.  It acts like a second set of roots to the plant basically.

And I could be mistaken here. -->  I also recall reading that it breaks down nutrients in the soil that the plant roots are unable to break down.  Then it feeds those nutrients to the plant.

In general it makes your plant healthier.

I think a lot of it has to do with the 'soil-less' media.

Are you using rockwool, or coco-peat / perilite / and verm.  Or hydroton?

I think the organic bio-poinic way to go would be to use a coco peat and perlite based mix with some verm and added oyster shell / peat moss.  for a soilless hydroponic organic grow mix.  That way all the organics and beneficial bacteria can be used.

the point of hydro system that the use of the water and the special nutirent are there in the perfect state or at least should be so the plant/s can uptake and use them as and when required there techinicaly u should have no need for Mycorhizae.

That's kinda silly though... hydroponics is far from perfect, even in it's perfect state. There are always fluctuations, and i figured a completely different method on maintaining that equilibrium (the fungi and bacteria) would be to add something completely different to the mix

So to be more precise, which i should have been at the beginning:

It's a "Poor Mans Hydro" set up. A real 4x4 table with 1000W cooled air filtered light. That's where the tech ends though. All i really do and have done is make sure the water level is always about 1" to a half 1" up on the rock-wool (which anyone who's ever even seen rock-wool knows that if there's extra water below it, the entire thing is totally moist from capillary action. Everyone three or so days i let them dry nice and good to be plenty of air, but it's most always moist, but NEVER fully submerged in water.

For feeding directly, and especially when inoculating with these myco spores i made the mixture, added some ferts and all the goodies including a good portion of the Honey Carbs Hydroponic carbohydrate source, i poured it directly onto the "core" slab, where all the major roots are. I think I'll continue doing that, and then just make up for the extra water on the sides, until i reach that 1" or so mark. Also i have air stones going full blast in the table itself, so that when that water level is reached, they're just barely submergged and really giving the water some extra O2

And to the person who said using non organic commercial stuff (like General Hydroponics I'm assuming) will kill a living system: that doesn't make much sense. If the concentration's low enough that it won't hurt the plant, then that means there's about as much nutrient level in it as say a totally soil plant. So what would it be in those that kills the living systems; they're just nutrients right?

I agree, hell, in a perfect world i'd use rockwool cores, surrounded by a nice peat, perlite, hydroton fed by a drip system outside during the peak of summer. Yeild some nice 2 lb plants.

Not a perfect world though, which sucks. I'm using rock-wool because it's the easiest, most efficient and most versatile medium I've come across. Hydro-ton rocks drive me fucking insane because they go everywhere, and turns the grow into a fucking hockey rink. Soil's too slow, and I'm assuming coir'd be a little faster, but i don't see anything beating this for the time being; simply for the ease and effectiveness. Obviously the one draw back is it's basically one use. I'll live with that though.
