A lot of people use bird seed or rye there are some good teks out there. You should try doing a search in the forum and see what you find. Also if you use mycellum syringes this could greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to colonize.

Take some finch seed or wild bird seed and put it in a pot with some water on the stove and simmer for about an hour at a low temp. Drain. Fill the jars loosely and cap with vermiculite and pressure cook like usual. Or try 9er tech in the find or grow section which uses rice without vermiculite.

I can't help my self vivid.Damn that was
funny.Yes bird seed is bird food.What you
are looking for in the food is millet,
milo there are some others i can't remember.
Hawk also has a tek that utilizes finch seed.
What crispy said made sense might give it a try.

I like Pennington finch food, its cheap,get it at WalMart..Alien's tek makes a badass cake too! Try'em both Pappa and see what works for ya.

generic whole grain substrate formula.
use any grain,seed desired or mix a bunch together.
add an equal amount of water to the grain/seed and gently cook it until almost all water has been absorbed.
mix with twice as much vermiculite and spoon into suitable containers then pressure cook 45 min. at 15 psi.
inoculate as usual.
TIP: add equal amounts of malt extract and brown rice flour to the water at a ratio of 16:1 for faster results.
