thinking about keeping this stray cat...
    #13286011 -

so friday night i came home and went to smoke a cig on my front porch. i live in a small apartment/house and have the bottom floor to myself (unconnected to the top).

as i'm smoking, this stray cat approaches me. i've seen it around before, but it had never let me pet it. this time it did, and i noticed that it's starving, so i gave it a little food. the next morning i went out for a bit, and when i came back, it was there again. i took it inside and checked it for fleas, then gave it some more food. the thing is really friendly and is absolutely starved for attention, and it pretty much hasn't stopped purring since i let it inside.

i gave it a bath and bought some cat food+flea shampoo, but i'm thinking about it now, and i don't know if i want to keep it. it's pretty young, so it's gonna be a long-term commitment if i do. i don't have money to get it neutered either.

i'm not sure what to do. i put it outside for a while today, kind of hoping that it would leave. it came back around 7 though, and now it's asleep on my couch.

i'm also kind of worried about how it will affect my social life. i don't want my friends to think of me as "that guy who lives alone with his cat." similarly, i'm not sure how girls will take it. might make hookups kind of weird.

has anyone done this before? is there anything else i should consider before i make this decision?

A friend of mine took in a stray cat once, but it lived mostly as an outdoor cat.  It would spend equal amounts of its time indoors and out I guess, meowing at the door to be let in or out.  Sometimes it'd spend days at a time roaming outside, but it always came back.

Girls will think you're sweet for rescuing a cat.
And do you like it? If so, who gives a fuck what other people think. Just make sure you can afford to take care of it if that's what you decide to do.

Cats make cool pets. I love 'em. He's yours now anyway since you fed him.

Yeah I think you got a good thing. There is a positive perception of people that have dogs, cats.
The cat is def letting you know. Guess you need a litter box for when you are gone. Sounds like you got it right so far.
Strays who are in bad health are usually covered in fleas or mange so the kitty is probably pretty healthy.

neuter it.

see if there's a local animal lovers group that helps cover the costs.

definitely get it neutered if you're going to keep it.

wait a bit though, so he doesn't take off after you chop his dick off.

Humane Society here gives out vouchers. Cost is less than $20.

The deal is, he's even worse than you and if he smells a ripe bitch within a mile he will wander off and get hurt or fight a lot.

If you do he won't be driven insane with wild cat pussy and piss all over so they know where he is.

We have a few. The fixed guys are laid back. The other guys not so...

One, you shouldn't base your decision on saving a kittie's life on whether or not people will think you're weird for having a cat. Two, girls will probably like that you saved a cat. It is a kind thing to do.

Cats are great tripping buddies btw. The purring and companionship can be really soothing.

i feed the stray cats in the neighbourhood. They let me pet them, I feed them, its a good relationship. Maybe you can just keep it as "the stray cat you feed"

btw, dont worry, girls like cats.

he's pretty cool...but his litter box stinks. gonna have to figure out a way to keep that out of sight while still letting him have access...

guess i can get him neutered for like $25 from the humane society too. seems like i'm gonna keep him. thanks for the replies everyone!
