Heating is not required, only recomended. Mycellium will colonize your jars perfectly well at regular room temperatures, only it will take a little longer. As the weather gets warmer in the spring months you could possibly hide the jars in an attic, where heat tends to collect. Just monitor the temps to make sure they don't go over 86 degrees. I dont know, just a thought.

make a small space in a closet, heat using a light bulb. Cover the jars with a towel to keep them in the dark.

Baldy is right about the temp, but if you insist on a little extra heat, just place them near your water heater. Mine is in a little room by the washer and dryer and the room stays about 80 deg. As long as you stay above 70ish you will have quick colonization with out risk of dehydration or condensation.

I have a secret Agent tip. I put my 3 1/2 pint jars in a small box. Then I took a small heating pad that is used for muscle aches and put it on top at the lowest setting. The size of the pad is about a foot square.
