masking tape will work fine. You can put it on before or after you innoc. the jars. pushing through the tape is fine. If you do decide to use a better kind of tape. I.E. plastic type. it will stay on the jars better and keep the lids from rusting quite so fast when you reuse them. dont worry about the downdraft too muc, thats what the vermiculite seal on the top is for. ------------------ -LuciferX- To be shaken out of the ruts of ordinary perception, to be shown for a few timeless hours the outer and inner world, not as they appear to an animal obsessed with survival or to a human being obsessed with words and notions, but as they are apprehended, directly and unconditionally, by Mind at Large -- this is an experience of inestimable value to everyone and especially to the intellectual. -- Aldous Huxley, "The Doors of Perception"

I have wondered about some of these questions myself. Here they are.1. When you puncture the tape doesn't it get contams from the outside of the tape ono the needle, and into the jar? 2. When the puncture holes are rusted, and you are reusing the jars, don't microscopic flecks of rust (contam) get in the jar. 3. Don't contams fall off the tape exposed to the holes? I have had sucess at least as far as colonzation using masking tape, with rusted holes and such, but I just wonder... ------------------ Away!

i had thought about the contams on the tape as well. i put some rubbing alcohol on the tape before i inncolated, but that's probably just being paranoid. and as for rust getting onto the cakes, well, rust doesn't multiply, since its not alive, so its not a problem. of course, if you consider rust a contam, then i don't know how you would sterilize your jar, heat won't destroy rust, just kill any real contams on it. yea, my holes are rusted too, I hope this doesnt matter, I let my jar sit in hot water + bleech (I think) today for 1 hour, steam sterlized for an hour, let cool down, and am going to put spores in tommorw

I got sick and tired of the rusted holes and bought Ball wide mouth "storage lids, not for food processing." Only reason they say that is there is no way to assure of a vacuum after canning. But we don't can do we ;D I use a 3/64 drill bit for the holes, but a hot nail or something will work. I use these lids over and over with no problems. Also, when I do 1/2 gals I use these same type lids with a half inch hole drilled into the center and a filter disc. They sell for about $2.50 for a box of 8. Money well spent. Jars are 1/2 gal of birdseed/verm inocculated tonight with 3cc each of EQ from Sporechicks. Will do a follow up thread w/ pics regarding colonization times etc. ------------------ -ChesterCopperpott- "Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway."

Oh, as for sealing holes, I use 3M painters masking tape. It hold up to the heat and since I cover my jars with aluminum foil while pressure cooking, moisture hasn't been any problem. The tape peels back to inocculate (I fold a little tap when applying the tape) and then goes back into place for about 2 weeks. I then remove tape completely and place jars in a rubber maid container with a filter disc to allow for contam free air exchange. I have notice accelerated colonization times and no contams.------------------ -ChesterCopperpott- "Old enough to know better, young enough to do it anyway."
