How important is it to tape the holes?

I'm using two different Teks - the standard PF and a variation on it from Erowid. I just innoculated my jars yesterday. Today I was looking through the PF Tek and noticed that it says to tape the holes in the jar lids while waiting for mycelial growth. The other Tek said nothing about it. Right now I have no tape on the lids. Is this a crucial step?

Don't worry about it. I used tape also for the first year or so of growing. Then I stopped using it because I ran out of it. You don't need it. It's really just for newbie who might not really be clean enough. As long as your clean a 100% try to be anyway...then you'll be fine. Now I wrap my jars in tin foil before I p. cook. WORKS FINE.

If you tape the holes, your jars will stall from c02 buildup - Better to get some alcohol swabs and tape these over the holes as these act as filters and allow air exchange

If your clean enough no need to tape the holes, my buddy puts them right back into the box which he spray'd good with lysol, Duck tapes it and lets them go 2 weeks, opens box in a very clean environment ( ie. everything sterile, he puts on gloves washes his hands with alcohol, ect..) and turns the jars over to drain out the co2. 1 week later there usually ready to go. He is very clean and has never had a contam in a jar. At least thats what he tells me. :)

I've also always used micropore tape over the holes so 02 can still enter but no contams; also I reckon the alcohol swab idea suggested by bm would be good too...;)

Holes? Tape? I don't bother with either. When it comes time to innoculate, I just take the lid off and innoculate.

It works for me and it'll work for you! It doesn't take much common sense to make sure the room you are in is clean. And that goes for the air. By default, the air is NOT contaminated.
