Outdoor morel bed
    #12633006 -

I have some Morel mushroom spawn that I purchased online and I wanted to ask a few questions on soil preparation. I planned on spawning to 40 pounds of organic top soil with 5% by volume agricultural gypsum with the ashes and left over burnt pieces of a few logs. Here is my question, what kind of wood should I burn and add to substrate? It is between oak, hickory, maple, or all three. Maybe a good combination of two of them? Anyways, I know this is a crap shoot but I want to give it a try. Does anybody have any advice that might be able to help me? Thanks in advance for any advice given.

I wouldn't use oak myself. I associate the acidity of oak with anything but morels, really.

I might have to agree with you there. I actually want to know if some one else has done an a bed of their own and if they had any advice for me. I was mainly trying to ask about soil prep for my bed and what other people were doing.

good to see your doing the morel thing just got two petries started and isolating some more from the 10 lbs I just recently picked.
I found some natural charcoal at a health food store in my area and was wondering since it's all natural wood charcoal, would that work to add into my bed?
Also I canot locate a source of sawdust, so what should I noc my grain too, before I put it into my bed?
Sorry for thread jacking...

Your not thread jacking my man, I am trying to learn as much about morels before I spawn my babies. I was thinking about doing a grain to grain transfer so to speak of the existing spawn I already have. I was going to take a small portion of the existing spawn I have and transfer it to a jar of suitable substrate; I am not even sure if rye is suitable but I am just so used to it. If you know about morels speak your peace.

Oak does grow well on calcerous soils, yes, and therefore morels may occur near oak, although 99% of the finds in the hunting section are not near oaks. If you're conditioning the soil yourself, then I'd suggest adding lime to lift the pH, especially if you mix in oak in any form, as oak tends to be acidic.

Good advice. I guess I will just go with the hickory seeing as how the logs are already split. I planned on testing the ph and adjusting accordingly. Keep the advice rollin' fellas, I really do appreciate it.

I know nothing about hardwoods, since I live on the wast coast and the majority of hunting grounds are in  doug fir, burns and clear cuts.

Does anybody here have or has had a morel bed? I would just like to know the best way to take care of mine.
