Re: NSW Shroom Season 2010 [Re: Scraps]

Hi To everyone here !

I've being doing quite A bit of research lately into shrooming and mushrooms and am extremely interested on going on a hunt for myself.

I'm thinking of heading out to Central NSW just outside of the blue mountains and doing a bit of hunting one of the many introduced Radaita Pine State Forests out there. Obviously looking for the types of mushrooms that thrive in pine mulch and deposited matter such as P. australiana, P. eucalypta  P. tasmania /Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Any particular advice or experiences anyone here has in pine forest hunting ?

If your not having much luck, check out this posted by msanchez420. He gives you some really good general information regarding hunting for subs.

Good Luck.

I find it ironic that you plan on looking for P. eucalypta in a pine forest
Anyway P. australiana, P. eucalypta  P. tasmania are all synonymous with P. subaeruginosa, and yes they do grow in pine forests as well as around native trees (in woody wet undergrowths, water run offs, between two steep hills, near creeks etc).
In the best places you can feel the moisture in the air, often there will be grass (such as that found in my sig) growing between bits of wood and there are often lots of ferns. Look under bushes and on the sides of roads (where water collects). Basically use your judgement and look for particularly wet places.

Thanks for the kind advice everyone !

A Few more brief questions , When does the Shrooming season end roughly and since im hunting for P. subaeruginosa im somewhat concerned that I may accidentally pick Conocybe filaris, sources describe it as looking extremely like  P. subaeruginosa and possesses extremely toxic chemicals

Quote from wikipedia "Conocybe filaris have been shown to contain amatoxins, which are highly toxic to the liver and are responsible for many deaths by poisoning from mushrooms in the genera Amanita  and Lepiota. They are sometimes mistaken for Psilocybe, especially the Psilocybe cyanescens and the Psilocybe subaeruginosa species due to their similar looking Pileus (cap). "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conocybe_filaris

This type of mushroom seems to have a dish like structure about midway down the stem , I understand that P. subaeruginosa doesnt possess such a characteristic, can anyone confirm this and perhaps any other differences.

Mate I understand your concerns and infact it is good that you have concerns. However once you start finding subs etc you will know by eye straight away whether it's a sub or not most of the time. Just take a look at the stems of those Conocybe Rugosas, they look nothing like subs. Overall colour is far too dark and they wouldn't bruise. Plus when you did a spore print you would know. That's why it's always important to do a spore print. Never be arrogant.

No P. Subaeruginosa do not have those rings (probably veil remnants) around the stem.

And yeah, bruising and spore print colour are probably the most important things to note.

I think the biggest risk is picking a galerina instead of a sub. But like the others have said, it all comes down to the bruising and spore prints.

Couple of pics from today's hunt. Heaps of saffron caps around. Just thought I'd take one home. Cooked up a few last week. Not sure about the oyster looking one or the gyms. Any help?

Deadly ones scare me! I don't want to die! I hate that some look like subs.

Does anyone know if the toxins are water soluble?
Say you were to accidentally pick one with subs and not spot it and have some strained tea with it... would it do the same as digesting the actual mushroom?

I picked a mushroom that wasn't a sub (i think) but threw it out. The weird thing about it is it bruised just like a sub and It didn't have a skirt but it looks exactly like some conocybe filaris pics that google returns.

I still have a couple of photos of it, been meaning to get an ID but haven't gotten around to uploading them. The only reason i threw it out is coz it didn't have a pointy bit on the cap... thank god.. otherwise i might have eaten it.
After seeing some conocybe filaris pics I have realized how dangerous a tiny little identification mistake could be..

Check out some of the Galerina pics here.  You'll see how similar they are to subs. I'm not sure about toxins being destroyed by being boiled though.

I have heard that deadly shrooms will release their toxins into tea.

On a side note, I made some shroom tea for the first time, but the tea tasted very mushroomy. I was lead to believe it would have no taste. It was made with dry mushrooms - what gives?

I look high. I look wide. I go to the mountains for a few days, and I go for numerous lunch time bush walks in a 30km radius from my home. I take the advice and hints from hunters I meet through friends. I say special prayers before going to bed. I find nothing. And then, the other day, I take my son to pre-school, and what do I find growing under the trees along side the pre-school fence? A nice little patch of subs!
Mostly pins, but I take a few anyway, because I don't like my chances in a busy spot like that. (Don't worry, I did it later, without my son, his buddies and teachers watching.)

So, should I dose pins and semi-mature fruits as I would with larger, more mature specimens?

-K

Grats mate. Good to hear you've found yourself a patch. I haven't been able to find any data or information about the potency of pins compared to full caps.

I'm just jealous of your habitat photos. It was flogging down rain yesterday so I really didn't want to bring the camera with me. A couple of my finds were completely submerged in water because the rain was coming down that fast.

Yeah mine always tastes exceptionally foul. I mix it with some rosehip tea and sugar, cancels out the taste, tastes like odd red cordial. I hate the smell/taste of dry shrooms :puke:

Also how long do ya'll normally wait after a good rain starts? 2-3 days? a week? I wanna go now but it has only been raining for like 2 days here, I don't want to go out and find heaps of pins and have to go back again.
