Transcendental Meditation Experiment (Crime rate reduced)
    #12522853 -

This was prolly posted before but....

Transcendental Meditation

A study published in the peer-reviewed journal Social Indicators Research reports on one of the most dramatic sociological experiments ever undertaken. Researchers predicted in advance that the calming influence of group meditation practice could reduce violent crime by over 20 percent in Washington, D.C., during an 8-week period in the summer of 1993.

In fact, the findings later showed that the rate of violent crime--which included assaults, murders, and rapes--decreased by 23 percent during the June 7 to July 30 experimental period. The odds of this result occurring by chance are less than 2 in 1 billion. Rigorous statistical analyses ruled out an extensive list of alternative explanations, according to John Hagelin, lead author of the study and director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.

Very cool.  That makes a lot of sense to me.  If you meditate it brings the vibrations of an area into greater equilibrium :yesnod:

Yeah I read about that not too long ago, but I forget where I found the article.

Also another experiment was done where people would be asked to meditate, and imagine themselves flexing their biceps. Without lifting any weight over the duration of the experiment, the average muscle growth on the subjects biceps was average of 13%.

The mind is an amazing thing.

I'm not quite sure how well it holds up, but here's a counter-argument from a site

The second example was of the supposed “Maharishi Effect.” John Hagelin of the Maharishi University, described how in 1993, violent crime in Washington D.C. was reduced over a two month period, by 4000 people practicing transcendental meditation (TM).

There were many problems with this experiment. One was that the murder rate rose during the period in question. Another was that Hagelin’s report stated violent crime had been reduced by 18% (in the film he says 25%), but reduced compared with what? How did he know what the crime rate would have been without the TM? It was discovered later that all the members of the “independent scientific review board” that scrutinized the project were followers of the Maharishi. The study was pseudoscience: no double blinding, the reviewers were not independent, and the experiment has never been independently replicated. Hagelin deservedly won an Ig Nobel Prize in 1994 for this outstanding piece of work.

"How did he know what the crime rate would have been without the TM?"

Did they really ask that??

According to what I've read, the murder-rates actually went up during this experiment?
Can anybody give validity to this argument, because I don't know many details about the TM thing.
