Re: Cats and Shrooms: An experiment Part II [Re: valour]
    #2517963 -

Valour what your missing is that you can have a PET ANYTHING. LOOK at Michael Jackson, he has monkeys, llamas, and untill recently we never used, IGUANAS as pets, or PIGS, or lots of little girls and boys around the farms have pet chickens, horses, ect.

Christ we even had a pet rock in the 60's. Again the rock never changed just peoples perception on who or what deserves our love did.

Oh, an my finger seems to be going right thru your eye socket. Cause your lookin pretty bad right about now.

Heres the things your SUBJECTIVE friends are saying:

"Giving any kinda psychoactive drug to an animal is sick.
And anyone who does so deserves to be locked up for harming an animal."
--- Ok what about TORTURING, then EATING THEM, THATS OK RIGHT?

"Cows, chickens, etc, fish are bred for eating. Cats and dogs are domesticated pets."
---- Um starting tomorrow Im going to start a family and breed my own children for eating. Well not all of them for eating, just half of them, they will have different 'functions' Then its ok right? I mean this is the logic your using. Thats my SUBJECTIVE choice right, and thats ok by your LOGIC.

Shit. I wrote out a fairly lengthy reply, and it somehow didn't get posted. I'm not going to re-write it, but I'll summarize.

I apologize for calling you an asshole (indirectly)... you're right, I'm not qualified to make that judgement.

If I'm reading you correctly, your main issue is the misuse of the word "hypocrisy." It's true. That's not the right word. How about "inconsistency of belief."

As for your question... without context, sure, I think torturing an animal is worse than killing it for food. Unfortunately, eating meat implies (I talked a lot about the assumptions I was making in my argument in the post that didn't show up) that you get it from a source that treated the animal you're eating inhumanely and that you don't need meat in your diet to survive, which is true for most people. Therefore, eating meat and condemning cat-tripping is inconsistent UNLESS you fall back on the hardly supportable idea that certain animals are either innately more/less deserving of life and well-being than others... or that the purpose humans use them for defines their right to life and well-being. So it's either inconsistent on the one hand, or backed by an absurd (yes, my subjective view) level of anthropocentrism on the other. Neither of which are hypocrisy, sure, but equally contemptible.

A head of lettuce or cabbage or a tomato has just as much meat to it as a cow or chicken, except it too also cannot scream when you rip its nerves from the ground, thus killing it. YEs plants feel pain also and ripping a plant form the ground is cruel and usual punnishment for the plant.

IT too has feelings. IT has texture, and it is just as alive as a cow or a chicken. Anything that reproduces has the intelligence to reproduce so it can actually think. If it can think then it has feelings.

No actually the plants want to to eat them becuase thats where the seeds are. If the tomatos dont get eaten then how is it going to deposit its seeds elsewhere? Have you even thought that thru??? When was the last time you could relate to a tomato in anyway shape or form??? We have to eat SOMTHING for gods sake!!! But humans have a choice. Its time we choose the lesser of two evils. If you can live off of rain water and sun then go ahead but for the rest of us it Vegetables. What about an apple or most nuts, you dont hurt the tree at all, you just consume the fruit (in otherwords you can eat all the apples, peanuts, ect you want the tree still lives)..., oh but I guess thats wrong too based on your logic.

Mjshroomer your response is nothing more than a last ditch attempt to validate your argument.

Intelligence is not a neccessary condition for reproduction; faulty logic. Anyways, this thread is waaaay out of control especially for the pub. Can we get a lockdown please?

Well I talked to one of my three tomatos yesterday while I was preparing a salad.

I said, "Well, looks like I got to share you witht he avacado today Mist3er Tomato."

"Aren't you the juicy one."

"And look, there is your cousin the Radish being sliced and diced. You don't mind sharing the bowl with the Onion, do you?"

Anyway. Tomatos fall to the ground. Do they seed. WHo knowns. Selective breeding in the toimato family is cool.

hehehehehe.

MJ: If the decision not to eat animals was based solely on the fact that they were alive, your criticism would be valid as such. I don't think that's anyone's criteria. Saying that plants "think" and "feel pain" is an interesting argument, since that comes closer to the reason that I (and many other vegetarians/vegans) don't eat meat, but pretty pointless without backing it up scientifically or philosophically. I realize you're just poking fun, but if you think that's a legitimate argument, I would be interested in hearing what you have to say about it.

Bert: what's so "out of control" about a rapidly evolving discussion? the fact that it strayed from the topic? the fact that it's not light-hearted and jolly, yet it's in The Pub? I think locking it would be rash. It's not a flame war, it's not causing any problem for those who choose not to participate...

Yah, you're right. There was some flaming going on earlier though and a lot of it was directed at suzo, it just seemed very 'un-publike' to me. The thread is mostly dead anyways.
