"Contributing to the advancement of the human race"
    #12461248 -

My roommate makes a huge deal out of this. He says, in his mind, he doesn't care what a person does as long as that person is "contributing" to the human race.

I don't really get it. The way I see it, people have never been able to tell who was contributing and who wasn't until they had hindsight, and even then, "contributing" is a very murky word.

My roommate, for example, does nothing. He goes to work, then comes home and gets online. He is gay, and he says he contributes by being an activist for that cause, but to me that just seems like he is pursuing his own interests for his own benefit.  He smokes weed, but he looks down on the fact that I drink and do shrooms. He is very judgmental in general, but he does not seem happy to me at all. He has voiced his belief that it is his destiny in life to "be a selfless martyr" for the human race, not ever being able to truly find happiness in his own life, only helping others to do so. I think that's just fucking BS.

What do you think about the idea of "being a contributor"? How do you define it?

The idea is good.

Your roommate is nuts.

If no current methods are available to measure contributions, would it be useful if one was?

Outside of yourself, all you can do is make an impression.

First of all, there is no advancement of the human race. No progression, only change, only minuscule or macroscopic differences.

i smell hypocrite and a person who doesn't do what he expects others to do.

(he wants people to accept him for being gay, yet he doesn't accept someone else for their drugs of choice)

I don't like him. Not because you've convinced me of his hypocrisy or laziness, nope. I don't like him because he's gay.

You should ask your roommate what he thinks we are advancing towards.

Where's the stop sign on the human advancement road.

I contribute to the human race by testing it at every turn.  Some call me The Adversary.  Others call me Sub Zero.

Your friend is a retard--what does he consider a worthy "contribution"?

What cause is he an activist for?

Has he told you why he looks down on you for that?

Sounds like most people. :satansmoking:

Yeah it is fucking BS--he is a delusional moron with a Jesus complex who doesn't understand that you cannot really help others to achieve happiness when you yourself are unhappy.

I think there are enough masses of people that are contributing to society to make up for the few who do not wish to do so. :uptosomething:

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.
