Millet question
    #1237646 - 01/21/03 04:15 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Heres the deal. I was gonna prep some jars tonight but i found that I only have enough verm for about 6-8 jars. I bought some millet on a whim the other day and was wondering how I can use it for the other 4-6 jars. (half pint jars btw)

I figure I can wash then simmer the millet till the seeds are like double size. Then load them up in the half pint jars and steam as I usually do. Then innoculate as per usual. Sound about right?

I have quart jars but no pressure cooker (hopefully within the next 2 weeks I can afford it).
Im pretty sure (based on my reading here) that it would be a waste of time to try quart jars without a pressure cooker. Or is it?

Any advise?

Yeh i would only use the 1/2 pint since you dont have a pressure cooker but you have to make sure to cut a gas exchange hole with a filter or polyfil, i dont know if this is your first time with grains or not. Some people say dont use anything less then a 1 pint jar for grains but ive used 1/2 pint with success before you just obviously have half the substrate in the end but it shouldnt take long to colonize.

You need to pressure cook birdseed.

You really do need a pressure cooker, but I have heard of using a microwave for millet. Never tried it, but I guess its worth a shot.

Ah well... I figure Ill just try it out and see what happens. Ive got the spores to spare. Im simmering them now. Its been about 20 mins now and I think Ill let them go for another 10-20 and then steam them for an hour. I guess I'll just prove you guys right in a couple of weeks anyway.

It is my first time with whole grains. When I get a pressure cooker then I can really get shit going.
Im trying to figure out which one to buy, and where Im gonna get the fundage.

if you have a look at my grow log in the grow log forum you can see how i used millet without a pressure cooker.
Its still in the early stages but there were no contams pressent when i spawned it to bulk.
One thing to keep in mind is that millet seems to need more air exchange, but i dont now your jar set up and what filters your using as is.

Good luck you can just experiment with the extra millet jars as it wont hurt much.#
