Gas exchange for jars?

Exactly how much oxygen does the mycelium need to grow? My gerbil inoculated 8 days ago and after 3 days they germinated but haven't grown much if at all since. They have been incubating in my closet under a heating mat that keeps it around 85-90 degrees. Maybe it is like the saying: A watched pot never boils. But i am worried cuz they haven't had significant growth in 5 days! Thanx

zero. they don't really require oxygen. they may however get smothered by CO2 i should amend that zero. mycelium can germinate and grow in a sealed mason jar, that means no outside oxygen. if your gerbil doesn't see significant change in a week or so, you probably have bacterial or yeast infection. sometimes this can be hospitalized by inverting the jar and loosening the lid, which tends to let CO2 out, and fresh air in, which in turn reduces moisture and may tend to slowly favor the mushrooms over the contams. same goes for filter disks. the objective is to get the CO2 out. if you have contams, they are likely producing huge amounts of CO2. my cat has even gone as far as to temporarily remove the cake from the jar, and place it in a sterile terrarium, spraying it with 9 to 1 H2O2, in hopes of giving the mycelium a jump-start.

Good air exchange ensures rapid colonisation - otherwise the buildup of CO2 will stall the mycelium growth - take the tape off the holes and cover them with an alcohol swab which act as great filters...

Now that's a novel idea bm - alcohol swabs should work well! My own preference is to not use the lids, but to cover with foil instead with the ring carefully screwed on over a foil layer. Then you innoculate thru the foil and cover the holes with micropore tape from a chemist which lets air in & should keep contams out.....

Get some filter discs..I just got some and I am having great results...I used dark rye flour instead of brown rice along with the filter discs and I've got about 75% colonization and its only been about 5 days

I use waterproof banding aids with micro holes, works great and are cheap. My two cents. Peace, MAIA

i just had the same problem. 7jars started growing, then stopped, the other 5 never started. i took the tape off the holes and inverted the jars in a sterile tupperware container, and the growth in the 7 jars took off, and within a day , there was significant growth in the other 5. (i should add that the state of the jars didn't change for more than a week prior.)
