Cannabis induced depersonalization
    #12370007 -

Anyone here experience this? Or just depersonalization in general? I don't mean temporarily. I mean tapping into depersonalization and remaining there for months. It can be induced through trauma, drugs, and even alcohol. For those that don't know what it is, it's a serious mental condition. Basically, the brain is so tired, that it's shutting off various information being perceived, and 'causing you to feel like you aren't you. Often explained as always being in a dream, or not fully alive. Things look fake, and things get pretty surreal. This is my second experience with it. Last time it was induced through various drugs, when all of a sudden it hit me, and I didn't feel like an individual anymore, just an observer. Except I'de feel trippy all the time while sober. Wasn't able to function properly, and my speech became impaired. I went to the hospital after three months when it started climaxing. They gave me an anti-psychotic, which seemed to help. And no, I don't have schizophrenia. After about a month of taking the meds, I quit taking them, and felt normal again, and was very happy about that. 6 months later, I thought it would be nice to smoke a joint. Bad, bad idea. The trip was a constant panic attack and after coming down, I was fully depersonalized once again. I am on the same meds again as last time, and still recovering. It was only half a joint, too!

So yeah, I've heard stories of people becoming depersonalized and staying that way for years. I am extremely frightened if I end up like that. Last time it lasted 3 months, and it's been almost a month so far. Anyone experience anything like this? I have increased anxiety now since the last time I smoked pot. I can't even smoke tobacco or I'll start feeling a panic attack coming on. And I've never had panic attacks before pot. I hate this.

If cannabis is doing anything like this to you, it's time to let it go for fear that schizophrenia develops.

There's no way I'm ever getting near it again. I get really bad anxiety when I talk about it or smell it. I'm not going to drink alcohol anymore either.

And I was very frightened and aware that cannabis seems to link to schizophrenia. And my aunt has schizophrenia. I'm seeing a doctor regularly to see if it seems to be the case. Worrying about it makes my mental condition worse, and am more sure I have depersonalization. It has physical factors that come with it, stinging sensations in the head and spine, and various other pains. It often can feel as if you're going crazy, and schizophrenia will come to mind, especially if the depersonalization was induced through cannabis. This time around, it was actually induced by cannabis and excess alcohol, traumatic experiences, and sleep deprivation. Someone tell me I'll be fine. It's a really frightening experience. Not being comfortable with yourself and just being alive. So intense, the moment of now. Seeming as if I could disappear at any moment. And just feelings as if something is suddenly horribly terribly wrong.

how old are you right now?
i highly doubt you have schizophrenia.

depersonalization sounds like what you are experiencing.

Sounds like you are developing panic disorder or perhaps a similar anxiety disorder. Extensive use of marijuana can induce this in people with sensitive genetics to it.

Bad news is that your pot smoking days are over. The more you do it or if you continue it, its going to worsen it. Pot has been shown to increase or even cause anxiety and depression. I would consult a psychiatrist about being tested or treated for anxiety disorders and cut the drug use out. If you dont, it's only going to keep happening and getting worse until you have a major anxiety break and have constant episodes. if you get to that point it's very hard to recover from it and takes a long time. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Last night I felt really bad anxiety. I feel as if I'm not me and that I do actions but as if I'm not really in control of any of them. I start thinking about what/who I am and get more anxiety, and think about my mental/physical image and just start tripping out, which is what makes me feel schizo. It's clear I won't be smoking weed anymore. Weed started feeling "odd" after I meddled with salvia and then dxm. It was bearable, but just unusually trippy for just weed. I kept doing it until it progressed into straight up feeling uncomfortable about being in my own skin. Feeling like I'm not me, and then tripping balls about it. I've felt quite paranoid all day, trying to remind myself that I'm here and alive and am in control of myself. It's really frustrating and difficult. I am getting really desperate. It's getting hard to cope with these bizarre and distorted feelings. I don't even like looking in the mirror at this point. Oh, and I'm 22, to answer that question.

First things first: You're NOT going crazy. I know exactly how you feel, feeling like you're on the fringes of sanity, holding on by a thread.

I've had depersonalization since I was 12 (I'm now 18). It wasn't cannabis induced, but anxiety induced. I've always had terrible anxiety for as long as I can remember, and then just one day in the 7th grade I had an anxiety attack, and depersonalization came with it and never completely went away. I know EXACTLY what you mean by not wanting to look in the mirror. I know how it feels to be stunned by your own existence, feeling that nothing is real, or that you are trapped inside your own body. For me, huge, disturbing existential questions came along with it. I often wandered how I existed. I often felt trapped behind a barrier of language, I felt like I was isolated from the people around me because the majority of what I was feeling and thinking couldn't be expressed effectively with words. The biggest difference between us is probably cannabis…I'm a daily smoker and it helps me more than any of the prescriptions I've gotten in the past from my doctor. I know that sounds odd, but it works for me.

While I haven't cured myself by any means, I've made some breakthroughs that made things sooooo much easier to deal with. First off, exercise and eat right…I know it's a cliche, but I started lifting weights 4 months ago, and it's worked wonders. 5 months ago, I never would have imagined that I could feel as sane as I do these days…the terrible, gut wrenching anxiety is a rarity now. Also creativity. Get your thoughts onto a page, or into a song, or anything…that's probably as important as exercise, at least for me. Talk to people about it. I was surprised as hell to find out that 3 of my close friends have had trouble with depersonalization…and my sister, too. It's not that uncommon. I found that to be comforting. Tripping on mushrooms helped me too, but since your problems are attached to drugs, I'd steer clear of all drugs for a while.

It's important to remember that you're not going crazy. I felt like I was for years, every single day, I was one friggen panic attack away from being another teen suicide story. But here I am now…depersonalization still haunts me, but it's hundreds of times easier to deal with. I don't feel crazy anymore.

Hang in there.

To put it simply:

Eat well, exercise regularly, spend time with other people and don't do any drugs.

I believe I've gone through this before. Six months into heavy smoking and one panic attack on a strain left me depersonalized for months. Felt like nothing mattered and didn't really understand who I was or what I was before. But ya like the person before me said just refrain from any bud for awhile and live a healthy lifestyle and the problem should resolve itself.

Just read this thread and can't believe how similar I feel to the way you describe. I'm 29, been a daily heavy pot smoker for 15 years, tripped over 100 times.....never had a problem....until about 2 weeks ago.  I hadn't taken anything other than pot in over a month, had an 8th of shrooms about 6 weeks ago. Anyway I'm sober and I had what felt like a full trip peak while sitting reading a book, I'm not sure if it was a flashback or not but it took me right into the same ego death/disassociated/lost in the cosmos headspace that occurs just before reality stops/dissolves on a high dose of shrooms or lsd. I have the same sense of fear that something is just about to go really wrong, like time might stop or the universe might implode or something, very very intense, the fear is acutally worse than anything I've had while tripping but it's definitely a psychedelic type paranoia. I have had repeated episodes every day or 2 since it happened and my dreams have started leaning in the same weird uncomfortable direction. So far I have managed to maintain, I am a seasoned tripper and use the same breathing techniques etc to calm myself down. My problem is that I am addicted to pot in a bad bad way, I have only smoked hash the last few days as it's always more mellow, I'm not sure if the bud is a contributing factor but it doesn't feel like it helps, turned down bud yesterday as I was scared to smoke, if you knew me you'd find that funny, almost.

I guess I just wanted to say I can relate and I know the feeling that you might be going off the deep-end for good. This is the first time I've been scared in my life, I won't be doing any drugs unless and until these episodes have been gone for a couple years. Oh yeah I quit drinking 4 months ago too, I think the stress of that along with other difficult private issues led to stress which caused it all, not sure though. I think being around people is the best thing, I know that's not easy when the world is falling apart around you but you have to try. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss things any further or just unload on someone who's in a similar place right now. Peace, hope things are tranquil and serene.

PS-valium really helps but it's no solution, I feel better knowing I have something that can bring me down, ask your doctor, no need to mention drugs, anxiety affects a lot of people. Clonazepam (xanax) might be a better option, it's faster acting and a bit stronger (approx 3x).

xanax or valium is not a good idea in my opinion because you might like it too much and develop and bad addiction.

In my experience you really have to abuse benzos (valium et al) to risk addiction. I have been prescribed them on and off for over 4 years and never craved them or taken them for recreational use. Not saying it can't happen but they are one of the most widely prescribed drug groups in the world, decribed as indispensible by the World Health Org.

I smoked heavily for four years.  I stopped about a year ago.  I regret ever touching the stuff and am an idiot for not realizing the negative effects it had on my sooner.  I don't have a sense of self and I feel brain dead.  This is no way to live and I only hope I can fix myself before my depression and dissatisfaction with my life kill me.

I did the same thing, man. I realized that it was fucking with me but didn't stop for some reason or another. It was almost like a spiritual experience, though probably not worth it.

I have the desire to get over it but I have little faith that I can do it alone.  These feelings have persisted for quite a while.  Self-hatred, feeling dead, wondering where time went.  The best way to describe it is that I'm pretty much a loner with severe depression.  I have people who care but I can't accept that they do.  I am looking into some sort of residential program to help me come up with more positive thinking patterns.  Any suggestions?  I think a change of environment is essential to my survival.

Yeah going some place far away from home for a good long while helped me a lot. Probably the best thing you can do. Away I could breath and think clearly, which helped me work through some shit. I'd recommend trying to go some place you know will have good vibes too.

Also, there's this book called Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda you could read. It's an ancient Hindu meditation technique and has helped me a lot. You don't even have to be religious( or believe in Hinduism) to practice it and for it to help(though it's definitely brought me closer to God). Basically, it'll help you work through those negative thought processes you've developed from all the shit and adjust your thought waves positively. It does take a good deal of discipline... something you'll have to work at. If you decide you want to check this out, don't go into it like it'll be a cure or anything, because it won't. Simply practice it.

Good luck man
