Heavy cannabis use by teens is more dangerous than alcohol
Ten-year study finds long-term users have problems with work and in relationships
By Jonathan Owen
Published: 22 April 2007
People who start using cannabis as teenagers are more likely than drinkers to suffer from mental illness, have relationship problems, and fail to get decent qualifications or jobs, according to a new study by academics.

"Cannabis really does look like the drug of choice for life's future losers," says Professor George Patton, who conducted the 10-year study that followed the fortunes of 1,900 schoolchildren until they were 25. "It's the young people who were using cannabis in their teens who were doing really badly in terms of their mental health. They were also less likely to be working, have qualifications or be in a relationship and more likely to be taking other drugs."

The 10-year study is the first of its kind to compare drinkers with cannabis users. Almost two-thirds of people had tried cannabis before they turned 18.

Heavy users of the drug were between three and six times more likely to use other drugs, compared with drinkers, less likely to be in a stable relationship and up to three times more likely than drinkers to have dropped out of education or be unemployed.

The results reflect the changing use and attitudes to cannabis by teenagers, according to Professor Patton. "Twenty or 30 years ago, cannabis was uncommonly used by teenagers," he said. "Alcohol use is still more prevalent, but cannabis use has become widespread in many countries."

The findings, from Melbourne University's Centre for Adolescent Heath and published in the current issue of Addiction journal, come after the health risks of cannabis were highlighted by The Independent on Sunday last month.

The debate intensified last week following a report by the newly launched UK Drug Policy Commission, which revealed how Britain remains in the grip of a serious drug problem. It says that one in four people in their late twenties have tried heroin or cocaine at least once and that nearly half of all young people have used cannabis. Britain's drug addiction rate is more than twice that of France, Germany, Sweden or Holland.

More than 22,000 people needed treatment for cannabis use in Britain last year. The number of emergency hospital admissions due to cannabis has almost doubled in five years - from 581 in 2001 to nearly 1,000 last year. Britain's teenagers are most at risk as the drug acts on the developing brain, according to leading experts.

Concerns have spread to some of Britain's top teachers amid worries that it is joints and not cigarettes that are now most likely to be smoked during breaks.

In response, Dr Anthony Seldon, master of Wellington College, Berkshire, held a conference on Friday. Dozens of the country's top schools, including Harrow, Bedales, Kingston Grammar and Uppingham, met senior police officers and experts from drugs and mental health charities.

"Most schools are in a muddle about how to deal with drugs," said Dr Seldon. "We know the problem is growing and about the new evidence linking cannabis to schizophrenia. But the absence of clear guidelines on what to do, or a clear message from the Government that cannabis is dangerous, does not help us."

But drug reform organisation Transform says that legalisation of cannabis is the way forward. A spokesman said: "It is precisely because drugs are dangerous that they need to be appropriately regulated rather than be left in the hands of criminal profiteers."

dumb isn't spelled dumm. I posted it because it was recent news on the health of cannibis users, and i wanted to see people's response. I don't understand your first point. I'm not sure of the amount of alcohol the drinkers used, it wasn't mentioned.

one thing to point out, is that alcohol is a much more social drug. if weed was as easy to get as beer, it wouldn't have such a stigma.

uhoh

psychedelics are making people leave the rat race
this makes them losers and their drugs dangerous.

i'll tell you what alcohol does
it is a blue pill
it makes you complacent with working
it makes you complacent with partying
it makes you complacent with meaningless relationships
it keeps you in the matrix
it keeps you in the rat race
it keeps you on the corporate treadmill

why?

because alcohol is not peace. alcohol is not inner stillness.
alcohol is not psychedelic.

what cannabis is, is a little bit of a blue pill, and a little bit of a red pill.
it is meditation in many ways. it is stillness in many ways. it is psychedelic in many ways.
it is also indulgent in many ways.
what it does is sit you the farbok down. slow your mind the shizbot up.
and put you in the present moment.
many people do not know what to make of the fact that for once in their lives they are in the present moment without the programming of authorities running through their monkey paced brains
so they just sit
and it feels good to just sit
damn good
so they just sit
then they realize i don't need to be a CEO
then they realize
I don't need to be in school.
then they realize
i don't need anything at all

this therein is a great trap, if they just get burned out, or a great blessing if they search deep within and find their inner passions

and what are inner passions? they generally are not managing a bank firm. fuck no.
they generally aren't peddling dollar bills and lining pockets, nor anything of the sort that is deemed valuable or succesful by a single file lined of clones whitewashing everything they come into contact with ... placating another with good days, how are the weathers, nice pats on the back... good good good children

cannabis erodes the game

no doubt it breeds losers...... no doubt...... it is up to the loser, once he realizes that all the things he is in danger of losing are elaborate shams, to find out how to win. some do. they become immensely succesful at following their hearts

some just don't give a damn and go the blue pill route, have eroded some programs from the matrix, but still really just aren't getting that alive or jived up.

i'll tell you what my research has shown me
alcohol kills brain cells
cannabis kills tumors
alcohol causes violence
cannabis causes peace
alcohol causes rambunctious childlike behavior
cannabis causes unconditional love for all sentient beings
alcohol kills many many people
cannabis kills none
cons? munchies, black lungs...... burn out... dopey head... these are all from abuse

cons from alcohol ab-use ? a coffin..... cancers...... fights... injuries

you pick. studies don't mean a lot when they are biased.... IQ tests proved blacks were absolutely stupid, but that's because the questions were so culturally WHITE that they were incomprehensible to those we shipped in from other countries and forced to labor for us.

now i will tell you
look at Buddhists, teenage Buddhists, you will find that they are more likely to be unemployed, homeless, etc... why don't we go rant and rave about how spiritual values cause people to drop out of society and live humble lives ehhh ehh eh? It's not bad to drop out if you are following your heart.

it's good to stay in school if you want to. none of these things matter at all

i can tell you there are bigger problems than marijuana amongst teenagersz, what about the cocky attitude that is behind every drag race, bar fight, hate crime, seeping masculine masochistic nonsense out of the television causing shootings and deaths and disagreements and hatreds and hostilities? this study is nonsense just because it is used to discriminate, regardless it does depict reality, it is just ammunition for a drug war though.
anyone that refuses to partake in the circus sideshow is called a loser by the ringmasters.....

a lot of people would call a monk a loser because he just sits around doing nothing all day, and feels good about it, funny huh..... what exactly does it mean that you sit around doing nothing all day, but your nothing involves pushing buttons, screwing things onto other things? what's the difference?

cannabis slows your brain down so much that you just really cannot be a part of the circus and this produces a large myriad of reactions, some will choose to just examine the circus and really get deeply in tune with it, learn about it in new ways

some will go out in nature

who knows.

i don't entirely advocate its use, most people don't seem to UNDERSTAND what it's about and just indulge... but i do advocate its effects, appreciation for meditation, stillness, health of the body, circulation of chi flow, unconditional love, learning to view all others as reflections of the self, just really good wholesome values.

....I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human......

Its all about moderation. But personally, I don't like cannabis. I have witnessed that it is much more harmless then alcohol though. cannabis just isn't my thing though. I do like mushrooms though, its perfect! it moderates your use for you!

I think you may be giving cannabis a bit more credit than it's due, leery. There are plenty of pot smokers who are perfectly content to be a part of the rat race. I live in friggin BC and thus I can testify to this. All kinds of folk are into the stuff. It doesn't cause people to change thier values in any major way.

And, uh, the munchies are not a product of 'abuse.' I for one get the munchies whenever I smoke, which is every couple months these days. It also sure as hell doesn't cause unconditional love for all sentient beings. No substance can cause anything like that. It may draw attention to proclivities you already have.

And what kind of teenage buddhists are you talking about, white hippies? Monks? There are plenty of buddhists who are just regular people, working regular jobs who also happen to be buddhists.

I can see the point you are trying to make, but you defeat the purpose with all kinds of grandiose claims.

As for the original post, obviously the report is ridiculous. Even if the statistics are accurate, and they probably are, it fails to take into account any number of variables that may contribute to the outcome, aside from the actual biological effects of the substance on the user. It's sketchy when this kind of garbage is used to make public policy, and of course this is exactly the kind of stuff that is used.

Just because a lot of pot smokers have employment and relationship problems it doesn't mean that pot caused the problem.

My guess is that people who have a willingness to try something illegal are more likely to question bullshit in areas of life as well.
