It really helps, just sitting in a circle, talking about that shit? To me, I'd need some whiskey for that..
Is it common, for the 'new guy' to be the dick that doesn't talk to anyone and involuntarily puts off vibes that he doesn't want to be there?
What would happen if I showed up about 3 shots in? Would I get kicked out?

It seems to me like that's the last thing you would want to talk about, is alcohol. That's like swearing off food, and then throwing gatherings to watch the food network. Obviously I don't get it..
Either way.. last time I was hospitalized the Doc said I'm not seeing 40 if I keep on keeping on. It's not hangovers anymore, it's dreams, shakes, brain jitters.. head stuff. Strange feelings. The dreams are probably the worst part. Heart beating off rhythm. Stuff like that. Trying to eat soup at family gatherings when you can't hold the spoon still, that's always fun.. stuff like that.

It happens all the time, people show up drunk frequently, I've only ever seen someone get kicked out twice, and both times it was because they were starting physical fights.

People don't talk about alcohol very much in AA meetings unless they are new. They talk about the problems they face in their sober lives, and how they deal with them instead of drinking. They talk about the solution, not the problem. For the most part.

Yes...I remember a guy that would describe a draft beer with the ice at the bottom of the mug and the sweat pouring down it...glistening in the sun coming through the window...lol. I used to get pissed off in the beginning ...but then, I realized he was keeping himself sober. Amanita...eventually, you will begin comparing yourself in, hopefully...and not the opposite. There is a solution...but like morowasted said, you have to keep an open mind, a level of honesty as best as you can scratch up at the time, and a willingness to go to any length to achieve this peace of mind that is promissed...and, yes...it is promissed...after taking step nine.
One foot in and one out never works and, the only thing I tell anyone that struggles is just to ask them..."How's your way working out for ya?". Not in a smart assed way...but a heartfelt, I give a shit way.
And, yes, people come to meetings drunk...and, no...they don't get kicked out....it is in our traditions.

So I guess step 1 is getting over that "angry defensive" thing huh? Lotta anger in that liquid isn't there..liquid anger.
So I suppose I choose, does the charriot turn back into a pumpkin, or a boat crossing the river Styx..

I was angry....after all,I was basically losing my best friend...I will also say that alcoholism among native Americans is roughly 10 times higher than average whites. A book called Under the Influence hypothesizes that Native Americans have been exposed to alcohol as a people far later than whites or any other race. The people with the lowest alcoholism rates are in the far east...the first to drink alcohol...They actually have a genetic condition that makes them reject alcohol....many will throw up after just a couple drinks. So...what they're saying is that basic evolution is gradually weening us off of alcohol....it will just take a few thousand more years...lol

So my longest was about four days with no alcoholic about a month ago. Been two days now and I'm going to give it another go. The depression is fucking crushing when you first stop, I have some kratom to help with the first few days but even that's only a bandaid. When did you guys notice that your cravings became less harsh?

They can last a while man...some people get them years later....I was lucky...mine stopped almost immediately...I had to ask God to relieve me of the urge to drink...I still say that prayer every morning, almost 17 yrs. later....My simple morning prayer is this..."God, thanks for waking me up....please help me to not take a drink today and help me to do your will, not mine." Then I'll say some prayers for other people that are struggling in and out of the rooms....that's it. Later that day or at night I say "Thank you God for getting me through this day without a drink."
As simple as that sounds, it was the hardest thing that I ever had to do...because, by doing this, I admitted that my way didn't work and I was desperate enough to try anything. I urge everyone to try this, even if you really don't believe there is a God....just say..."If there is a God,...."

do you get the sweats? my hands and feet would sweat so much.
I would start drinking the minute I woke up till I went to bed around 5pm.. I'm so glad those days are over.
I never had a time tho where i woke up and not remembering how I got there, or who I slept with, or how id gotten home. Never had a hangover either. My body loved booze and was made to function with it.
I was a happy loud drunk. I was super fun when i mixed with benzos. lol oh man I'd do some dumb stuff like poop on the side of the highway with bicyclists and motorists driving by. Or grabbing electric fences and seeing how long i could hold on. good times.

Truth is, I don't even like alcohol.
It is just... Always there.

Shane alcoholic,
So i'm at home right now visiting family. I'm sponsorless now. And there are no AA meetings. I'm trying to figure out what to do next.

I was forced to go to 4 AA meetings after a DUI. The best way I can describe it is "The Cult of Sobriety". They will passive aggressively try to shame you if you aren't 100% into the program. South Parks depiction was spot on. The 12 step model for recovery is pretty out dated at this point. Even the real therapist I went to admitted this to me. At best all AA is is a support group for people who want to stay sober; personally I find it more cult like than the Mormons.
I remember a guy who was at all of the meetings I went to who was writing in a tablet the entire meeting when it wasn't his turn to talk. The third one I was at he sat next to me and I finally saw out of the corner of my eye what he was doing with the tablet. He was drawing pictures of naked women similar to what a 13 year old kid would do. These were no masterpieces either and the guy was in his 60's.

The one thing it seems to have in common with religion in general is that there is little intergenerational room for revision.
