Re: Teen Anxiety [Re: danlennon3]

i believe that the main problem with anxiety is not living in the present moment. thinking about the future too much is what keeps us from truly experiencing our lives. if you really 'think' about it, most of your problems are not real. merely thoughts in your head. i came to realize this the other night after smoking a bowl and sitting by a fire in my friends backyard. all these obsessive thoughts kept rushing through my head, and suddenly i realized that all i had was NOW. when you realize that your a living, breathing, being and you become deeply aware of your surroundings, anxiety goes away and you can enjoy life as it is, without worrying about whats going to happen next.

oh, and definitely stay away from prescription drugs, no matter what your doctor might say. most of these drugs, such as xanax, klonopin, valium, ativan and centrax are VERY addictive and after a while you cant function without them. the reason for this is because once a Benzodiazepine (which is the class of all these drugs) is used the body needs less GABA, an amino acid whose function is to keep us calm and relaxed, since it is being provided by the drug. the brain doesnt make what it doesnt appear to need. after a few weeks of using such medicine, you MUST use the drug to assist the GABA or else you cant function. this is why once people are on these prescriptions, it is very hard to come off them. doctors know this, and they still prescribe them freely as they please, only because the drug companies pay them to do so.

The teenage years are categorised by increased anxiety. This isn't helped by the fact that teen anxiety is exploited so much by commerce, especially for teenage girls. Everywhere you look there are ridiculously perfect supermodels making them feel bad about their bodies. One has to recognise it for what it is, people who make you feel bad about yourself are doing so because they think you are weak and exploitable. You have to spot this whenever it happens, manipulative people will try to exploit your anxieties, and you need to show them that you are strong, and you will not be used. Finding the strength to do this is hard, I should know, not having had any relationships in my life, and having parents who are at work all the time (I am 17), but you have to look inside yourself and realise that you have vast reserves of strength and character. I like to draw, listen to music, read books, play on my guitar and 'meditate' (I hate using that word), these activities make me feel better about myself and build up my reserve of emotional strength, which I use to fight back against those who try to manipulate/exploit/use me. Basically, whatever talent you have, be it artistic (music/art/poetry), cognitive (maths/science) or physical (you like to dance), pursue it and nurture it. Seek people who are modest, selfless and kind in spirit. Pursue serious long term relationships rather than short term flings. Soon enough you will get through these troubled times and you will emerge from your cacoon as a beautiful, graceful butterfly, which will fly and look down on the petty maggots who once thought they could manipulate you. I assume that we are both sensitive people at heart, but it is that sensitivity which will make us strong in spirit.
