The Dharma

So I saw this video a while back and re watched it. Does this sum up what's talked about on these boards so much regarding
oneness and death anxiety?

How people try to obtain oneness  :levitate:  by realizing you are the whole universe is only an attempt to escape death.

Whereas Buddha said believing is clinging there is only salvation through knowledge, and the highest form of all knowledge is non knowledge, if you think you know Brahaman you do not know it, but if you know that you do not know the Brahaman then you truly know. If you really are it you don't need to believe it or know it. Like how the eyes don't need to look at themselves






It sounds so simple, like a child has the best understanding of this, it's like nothing really needed to be said in the first place. The world simply is because it is

Alan Watts is a personal favorite. He was a good-humored and sneaky philosopher. He only took himself serious long enough to explain what a grave mistake it is to take oneself too serious.

There is no Dharma by the way. And if you see Buddha, stick your boot up his ass.

Of course it is all to overcome death anxiety, but its not about trying to overcome it in a vain struggle, its about actually overcoming it, by seeing the inherent emptiness of all forms.

You can know Brahman, by being Brahman, it doesn't require belief or learned knowledge, just the willingness to not identify with what your mind comes up with as representing 'I'

IMO that video is very excellent. Makes the Buddhist goal clear and bright. I find my current thoughts on the matter to be in full alignment with what the buddha taught. My method in working with this is not traditional in the sense of seeking out a teacher but instead stumbling and bumbling along on my own.

I know I am massively late to the Alan Watts party but just picked up his book on Zen.....I loved his quote on Hinduism  - something to the effect of "in Hinduism (and by extension Buddhism) the universe is God playing hide and seek with himself".

In fact, when I said there was no Dharma I was taking Dharma quite seriously; when someone says Buddha is a buck-tooth pussy fart he is also taking "Buddha's words" quite seriously. To talk about Dharma and Buddha in holy reverence, as if either notion is or was a singular entity, is to undermine your self and assume truth comes externally.

The best way to take Dharma seriously is make fun of it: hilaritās and all that cosmic giggle jazz, less we forget.

I like that metaphor very much. On a similar note, you should check out his book "On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are". It frames us as "God" in basically the same hide-and-week way. It also concerns the illusion of separateness.

I most definitley will check that out.  I found Watts through a class reading list of Joseph Campbell's that someone had posted on Amazon. I ordered the whole thing and I'm slowly working my way through it.

IMO like the vid states this is just another way the ego uses to convince itself of it's immortality. I much prefer the Buddhist view.

It's possible, the ego as "operator" is a hard front-seat position to escape from. Even the ability to identify or acknowledge phenomena (regardless to what extent it is believed to be either separate or on a fluid continuum) requires an "I" -- a first person perspective that narrates the story.

Radar mentioned Joseph Campbell. I think viewing this problem through the lenses of culture and mythology, if we are interpret it as having any "significance", we may see that our consciousness and life itself is a grand story. Insofar as our perceptions are concerned--as abstract and limited representations of reality--it certainly is a story, and as our sciences push forward it becomes increasingly clear we aren't the [only] authors; we co-create consciousness. Amusingly enough however, much of the information we are officially learning about the mind under the conscriptions of white towers (replacing robes with lab coats) has been previously proposed in esoteric circles thousands of years ago. The tendency towards self-fulfilling prophesy always gets me -- then again we can only say "some" prophesies, less we rationalize the bullshit as well.

The Dharma is the teaching, and you can verify this for yourself to be true or not, that explains the way phenomena exist. Once you see how it all fits together then you will never have to hold on to any 'imagined' or 'illusory' reality. This freedom from fixation is the mind's liberation. But it takes a lot of learning to see it through to the end.

I agree. Our freight train is still in transit. I think it is advisable though to appreciate that we can learn from the most uninspiring experiences that manifest from unorthodox places, the nooks and crannies in life that we would hitherto never consider a source of learning.
