Melting Aluminum Trays
    #12174555 -

I've just made a bulk substrate tray using aluminum trays.  I know,  I know,  poor choice.  But they're cheap,  and very utilitarian!  They're perfect for the schematics I laid out.  I only wish I'd knew to line 'em with black trash bags or whatever,  beforehand.

I've used 'em before;  casing PF cakes.  And I knew that they were not recommended because they would get "eaten",  but I figured that they would be eaten over a period of a couple uses...  These trays are brand new.  This is their first use ever for anything.

It's been less than 24 hours,  and my trays are already being eaten!!  ...Dissolved like old toxic waste drums,  there's little holes appearing all over the sides.

At first,  I noticed there were beads of grayish-dark aluminum colored "sweat beads" on the sides,  and when I went to wipe 'em off they were quickly becoming holes!  At least it's only these 2 that went without "condoms" so to speak.  I guess it's an easy remedy to use protection next time.

But less than 24 hours!!!  I'm just gonna duct tape 'em for now and hope they don't disintegrate before my final harvest.  I wanna go and uncover 'em to check on 'em,  and replace the foil covers with saran wrap,  but I don't wanna mess with the CO2 build up. Personally,  I'm very surprised,  and I think it's weird.  24 hours?  Really?

That is pretty amazing it happens that fast. I've noticed after having a tray sit in aluminum foil for a couple weeks it's got a lot of holes eaten through it. I stick with non see through plastic now for my tubs and don't even add aluminum foil.

Whats wrong with rubbermaid or sterilite tubs, you can find just about any size to fit what you need. I just use tubs that don't allow any light through and don't have any real issue with side pinning.

True but you only get to use them once. I have 10 gallon blue rubbermaid tubs that I put large casings in that only cost $5 and I've used them more then 5 times already. I wash them with soap and water, and then wipe them down with 70% rubbing alcohol and there good to go no contam problems.

Yeah,  you are right.  Next time.  For now,  I think that black glad trash bags oughta' work.

When I started this project,  I planned on spending maybe $400.00.  Maybe.  It's approaching twice that now!  But yes,  now I know to invest in high quality polymer trays and not aluminum.

I use aluminum trays to pasteurize horse manure in a water bath in order to avoid leaching nutrients out. After a quick rinse they're as good as new. So they do have their uses.

I toyed with the idea of using them to grow but couldn't find a pan/lid combo tall enough. Glad I read this -- I'll never consider using them for growing.

And speaking of aluminum, there's a new aluminum Duck tape that's completely opaque (the grey stuff allows some light to penetrate). Even black plastic bags allow some light through. It costs the same as regular Duck tape. I now use it exclusively to tape places where I don't want the sun to shine. Try it, you'll like it.

If you are talking about using it to tape the sides of your tubs, there is no point.

Light does not cause side pins.

Hmm. Looks like I "learned" another falsehood.

What does cause side pinning?

Is there anything other than colonizing jars that should be shielded from light?

The space between a "wall" and a substrate is a perfect micro climate for pins to form in. That's what causes side pins and light is beneficial in all stages of growth.

Micro climate from the side of the tub.  Like  how wax paper or bubble wrap makes a faux casing layer to "help" induce pinning.

And light is beneficial to mycelium at all stages of growth even colonization.

A few quick questions OP - because we were discussing this about a day or 2 ago.

Was the bulk sub fully colonized, partially colonized or not colonized at all?

Was there gypsum in substrate?

::Edit:: Awwww shit i fell for another necro thread....

Trash bag liner should protect the trays and prevent side pinning.
