Popcorn vs. WBS

So i made up some popcorn while doing thePopcorn Playa Tek and at the same time I cooked up some WBS.  Last night I inoculated with an LC of Dancing Tiger thought I would run a side by side to see the speed of each.  The jars are already taking off.  I can almost guarantee that the popcorn will colonize faster than the WBS but am interested in the speed difference.  I believe that WBS is a much better spawn due to many more inoculation points.


Kinda bored thought I would write up a post.

Popcorn will be colonized faster because technically it has less surface area, so therefore it will colonize faster.  Also the WBS has more surface area and is better spawn because of that, it will have more inoculation points..

So we will see.

Right now, I'm doing 10 Quart jars of WBS, and 10 Quart jars of popcorn. I'm really big on documentation - so I can tell you, you are right. Popcorn colonizes much faster. Although, like the above poster said, its probably due to the less surface area popcorn has.

I think popcorn is a much better substrate, as I've mentioned, but a good amount of people disagree with me. A lot is just opinion, and what you are used to working with.

I HATED WBS until recently, for specific reasons, but it's grown on me :smile:  Now I usually due WBS and popcorn side by side, just for documenting differences along the way.

I use to use popcorn and wrote a tek once as well till I came to my wits.  Like already stated WBS has more surface area and can hold more mycelium, also WBS is made up of different types of grains which gives it the advantage of being more nutritious for your mycelium.  But popcorn works well as long as you can get your moisture content right.

LoL thought you would like that.  I tried rye once then never turned back, I like it cause it is uniform, as well as neat, and it is easy to get proper moisture content, and is very nutritious.

How much LC did you use on each jar and when did you knock them up.

I went overboard with the LC like 3cc per jar :lmafo:  when i do this it usually colonizes in 3-4 days.  It was inoculated like somewhere between 12-2am last night.  If you look closely you can already see it colonizing

I was gona guess 5-6 days on the popcorn and 7-8ish on the WBS

I guess we will see.  Using 3cc's is total overkill but IME shit colonizes quick.  Which I need in this evil house.  This is my first time using synthetic filter disk material for my lids too.

Filter disks are awesome.. I plan on buying some when I use up all my tyvek.. When I first started I got 500 envelopes from USPS and still got like 200 lol

That sucks..  I wasn't sure how far one envelope would go so I ordered 500 lol.. Now I know I can get 24 out of each envelope lol.  So basically I gota do like 4,800 more jars to use them all up lol

Are you using metal lids with holes underneath the filter discs?

I followed a popcorn tek and did not do this. Just metal band and filter disc. I have since read that my substrate will probably dry out before they even colonize.

..Well, I used spore syringes. I wish I would have made a LC, as I'm sure that would colonize so much faster. Currently on day 3 after inoculation and no signs of anything yet.

I don't have the experience to say if WBS is better but next time I will probably try something other than popcorn because I found it very hard to tell if I got the moisture content right. popcorn does not squeeze very easily and most of it looks pretty dry on the outside but then on the inside I can tell that it's actually quite wet, looking at the few that split open before I picked them out.

Im using synthetic filter disk material that I got from a shroomery member.  It is just the lid then the material then the metal ring.  The tek that I wrote for popcorn that I posted in the original post works pretty good for moisture but yea popcorn can be a bitch to get the right content
