Is boiling/simmering popcorn or WBS needed?
    #3898358 - 03/10/05 05:22 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Im getting ready to do some WBS or popcorn jars. Ive read about 3 different teks on each and some say that after soaking for 10-14 hours to boil/simmer the seeds. Others say to just soak for about 10-14 hours then load the jars and PC. Anyone who uses these methods have a preference or know which way works best?

Also, some teks say to take out all floaters from WBS, others say to leave them in. Which is better?

no it is not needed, but it helps get rid of bacterial indospores that can later germinate and cause contam, its just a prevenative measure

the simmer isnt needed but if you do simmer you can eliminate 12-24 hours of soaking time, simply simmer for 30 minutes and then allow to soak for 2

Yeah, I just recently did popcorn and WBS. I soaked the popcorn for 24 hours and simmered for an _hour_, PC'd and that seemed to do okay with that particular popcorn. Then a couple of days later, I did up some WBS jars, soaked them, and then simmered for about 20 minutes and PC'd. This totally screwed up the WBS (way too wet) and I started getting wet spot. So yesterday I soaked a new batch of WBS 24 hours, no simmer, PC'd, and those look much better.
All of this was done with a very thorough rinse after the soak and I used paper towels to get the excess moisture off the WBS while it drained.

Ok my last jars (spawned 3 today, will spawn 2 coming weekend)
Where just Rye and water, put in jars, PC.
No soak, no simmer, no contam! WIll do this in the future.

Used to soak my wbs and a short (10 min) simmer.

Short, after a good phat soak, simmering isnt needed.

Its not Anno's tek, but I know what you mean.
Corn has tougher kernels then both rye and wbs, so its harder to hydrate it. But I bet "annos tek" can be applied to WBS as well....

Dont know, ask Anno! He said it too that it wasnt his tek, in a thread here recently. Its a widely known method which he also shares at fungifun.

that explains that then, and I fint that this "instant" method gets a low contam rate with rye but a very high rate with wbs, perhaps endospores are more common in WBS, never had a problem with the water content of either "instant" method though,

Havent tried it on WBS. And I dont think I will go back to WBS
- its hard to get my hands on organic wbs
- the structure of rye seems to give a faster colonisation

Time for me to lay my olympic body to rest in my bed....
