Popcorn vs. WBS

Whenever I do WBS my jars colonize very slow and the WBS gets really soggy, its blows. I now want to see if I can have any more luck with popcorn, who likes popcorn better? What are the advantages/disadvantages?

only use popcorn if you're going to spawn it to some poo and/or straw. in itself, it's very nutrient deficient.

All that I use is the 60/40 pop. I prefer this method and I am on my 12Th grow this way. I used to use WBS, Popcorn is much easier :2cents:

i like wbs, think its pretty fast and i have more problems with it drying out than being soggy. i've never used popcorn - maybe i'll give it a try. i like wbs because its cheap as hell and works for me. how do you prepare your WBS and what method of air exchange do you use?

I soaked for 24 hours, drained for at least a few hours, canned, then PC'd for an hour @15psi. Synthetic filter disc or tyvek, and then polyfill stuffed in the 1/2" hole in the lid. Maybe not enough air exchange?

i usually use 2 1/4 inch holes and stuff em with polyfill, then just cover the lid with aluminum foil.

The key is in the simmer. If you'll simmer, then pour it into a strainer to drain, you'll notice it only drains for a few minutes at most, then no more water drips out. Shake it around in the collander to allow the steam to rise off the hot wbs. It's important for the surface moisture to evaporate off the grains. That's the reason yours is getting soggy. Draining overnight as said above does the same thing. It gives a chance for the surface moisture to dry off the wbs. Just make sure the grains are dry on the surface before you load your jars and you'll be ok. The moisture you need is inside the kernel after the soak/simmer-boil. RR
