I'm at Church right now and dying to tell the pastor off
    #12070768 -

I was super religios when I was a teen 10-15 yo, but after reading the bible cover to cover a couple of times, I found too many contradictions and so chose to live the rest of my life just being a good person and making my own rules of conduct, using my own moral sense and my own sense of right and wrong.

Today I came to church because my Mom is getting operated on tomorrow and it meant a lot to her that I come pray for her, so I put my own feelings aside and came to humor her.

It's just as I remembered it 25 years ago, even though it's 2 1/2 decades and 4 states difference.

A group of people gathered together to make them selves feel better about themselves by judging others.

If it helps them.
I'd say let them be.

I don't like it myself but some people live by this and that's a choice.

I just wish they would strive to be true to the bullshit they are trying to push so hard and judge their own actions and not judge others.

If the teachings of the god depicted in their book means so much to them, they all should strive to be good people and help others regardless of their actions, never judge or look down upon anyone.

Religion is a drug and some people need it. It is absurd that they can claim special privileges and blow each other up over these fairy tale disputes. Some day I hope we can have a society unencumbered by this garbage.

people are the same everywhere, church groups judge to make them feel better, Other groups make fun of churches that don't see their life style, material or something else. I think this all started in elm school, separation of the nerds from the popular. :2cents:

I too long for a day when people act right simply because it's the right thing to do, and not because we are trying to win a ticket to heaven.
But unfortunately, as long as there is a fear of death and what comes after and ignorant people or weak minded people, there will be those to exploit them.

I do judge all people and all things I encounter in life but I am not claiming to be or striving to be better than anyone else or judge others to make myself feel better.
My judgement is merely an observation of what others are doing, like knowing that crack is not for me because of my judgement of what I know about people that do crack. I have also judged gay people and came to the conclusion that being gay is not for me.
I don't think that I am better than a crack head or better than a gay man, I simply choose to live a different life that they do.
Church people also should by the very nature of what they preach or rather what the bible teaches (new testament "Jesus" more than old)
be compassionate and loving towards all of gods children, while teaching by example, not punishment.
The job to judge anyone is reserved to god, as is the right to punish anyone for their sins.

I already had this conversation when I was 13 yo with the pastor of the church I went to then and I got the answer I would always get when bringing up any example of God breaking his own rules.
"it's not for us to know or question why"

Since I have no fear of any god or respect for a god that rules through fear and intimidation, I saw nothing wrong with questioning the facts that they expect me to live my life by.

I had simple questions, like what makes this jewish god, better than the ones my ancestors made up and why should I as an Afro-Latin American choose to follow a doctrine of the people who conquered my people and forced us to believe in through threats of death and torture? What's wrong with Buddhism or Voodoo or whatever the native American Indians used to believe or the peoples of Africa or the Inca or Maya or Aztec, all closer to my ancestral roots and beliefs that took my peoples to their idea of heaven long before the conquistadors came to beat and threaten Christ into our lives.

Telling the pastor off will put you in the same exact boat as those who believe judging people is right.  Just keep it to yourself, unless the pastor has directly called YOU out on your so-called wrongdoings.

Pray for you mom if you feel that is the right thing to do and forget about everyone else there.  You did go to service for you mom and not yourself, right?  You didn't go to appease any of the crowd, right?  Just "humor" her and pray for her.  Fuck the rest of the crowd.  You obviously care enough about your mother to do something that you normally wouldn't consider.  I'd say that alone is enough to make a difference.  Judging everyone else based on their beliefs won't help your mother.  Judging others for being judgmental doesn't place you any higher than they.  Leave them be.  They do the same for you.  I'm sure if you shared your experiences with the church (regarding your mother) they will pray for her, and in the long run, I'm sure that will at least make her feel spiritually better.  You obviously love her enough to go out of your way to accommodate her beliefs; don't go and belittle her people while you are praying for her.

If you go to church to pray for her, let that be the only reason.  Don't go just to criticize others.  If your mother is truly in need of prayer, I'm sure she will appreciate all the prayer she receives.

To openly attend a church service and pray to someone you may or may not believe in speaks very highly about how much you truly care for your mother.

She is lucky to have a child that cares as much as you.  As of right now, this isn't about you, but your mother.  I am not religious, but I will also pray for her as well.

Take Care!
