Anyone else have problems with Tyvek?

I used Tyvek from envelopes bought from Office Depot, single layered, I think that they're Survivor brand. All three jars now have contamination. Various molds. My inoculation method could very well be the culprit, so I'm not quite blaming the Tyvek yet. However, all contams started on the top, and I've shaken since inoculation.

Is envelope-quality Tyvek not quite thick enough for filter use?
Has anyone else had problems similar to this?

I go to the post office, and get ~20-30 envelopes, and use them for a few months. I've not had contam problems with tyvek, worse contam problems with MMFDs.

Ok, I wonder if the post-office made envelopes are thicker than what I got. Mine aren't any thicker than paper. They feel like paper woven out of plasticy fibers.

I don't think the envelope version of Tyvek is all it's held up to be. Tyvek.com
Try polyfill. Search Shroomery for 'tyvek'.

I have great success with the FEDEX TYVEK envelopes. I did a side by side compasrison with Tyvek vs. no Tyvek and The Tyvek jar colonized much faster.
I can make 5 filters per envelope for regular mouth qt. jars.

I've used some different kinds of Tyvek and never encountered contaminations due to it.

What is possible is that condensation form between the tyvek and the lid. This will surely leed to contamination with molds.

This is what happens. Condensation form on the tyvek and nuntrients are dissolved (from inside the jar to the outside). Molds grow on these nutrients and their hyphae will grow through the tyvek. Once inside massive contamination results.

You can prevent this by using using a lid with a large hole and by not placing the tyvek tightly under it but rather loose. Then when incubating push the tyvek down so it makes no direct contact with the lid.


This is what might happened here. If not the spores or inoculation tools might have been dirty or you have introduced airborn contaminants.

Una has hit the nail on the head. I have been experimenting with different preparations of Tyvek. I just verified Una's suggestion. I PC'd my millet w/ a Tyvek filter and plasic lid w/ 3/8 in. hole drilled in it. I never inoculated the jar but did inoculate some others that were cooked at the same time. On all of the others I wiped the moisture between the lid and the filter. I waited 4 days after inoculation and shook all of the jars. Although I never opened the control jar it showed contamination very shortly after shaking. The other jars that had been dried have not contaminated.

Well, I went back and checked on the jars that had been contamned, and that is what happened.  Directly underneath the hole in the lid there is a spot of growth on the filter.  I like to keep contaminated jars to watch them grow:grin: 

Would it work to use a syringe and put a drop of bleach or hydrogen peroxide onto the filter through the hole in the lid?  Perhaps on every third day or so?

i have had wonderful success with a double layer of the tyvek from "chem " suits. i have an unlimited supply of these, and i havent used anything else since my first trial run.
with plastic lids, i have a dime sized hole in the center( for air exchange), and a slightly larger than a syringe hole for innocculation, which i cover with clear shipping tape.

i've used tyvek now on 21 quarts of grain with zero contams.
i make 2 small holes in the lid with a nail.
i put a square patch of tyvek under the lid.
one hole is left 'as is', for air exchange..
the other is where i inject the inoculant, after which i cover that hole with a band-aid.
i got my tyvek at http://www.intothewind.com under kitemaking supplies..."white Tyvek" 36"X60" $2.50..

if tyvek is giving you problems, goto walmart, or any store like that, and goto the craft department, the pillow casing/quilt stuff, there should be tyvek/filterdisk looking material, its approx $1.47/yd and works great. can make like almost a 12-18 roundies outta one yd.

i did sort of as hippie3: i used the standard metal ring lid. i put a 3/8 inch hole far to one side of the lid. after pc, i inoculated through that hole then spun the lid around so the hole is on the other side. so far very good. pics will be posted after fruition.

From my experience the only disadvantage of using the ring w/o the lid is drying of the top surface of the grain . I use millet which seems to have a lower water holding/retention capacity than rye. I would rather have a bit of dry grain than a contaminated jar though.

I solved that by putting the tyvek on top of the lid w/hole (metal lid w/band) so that the lid makes the necessary seal and the band seals the tyvek around the edges.

I use the standard 2 piece metal lids with tyvek. I put two holes with a screwdriver in the metal lids and put the tyvek on the outside of the lids. It keeps the moisture on the filter down while still allowing for plenty of air exchange.
