Tyvek filter

Hi everybody,
filterbags and other high tech equipment use Tyvek filter to prevent loss
of water but allow air exchange.
Mushmush offers 1m^2 for about 15 Euro.
I suppose it is the same material which is used for gliders and kites.
You can get 1m^2  for about 6 Dollars or Euros.
Maybe a good alternative to seal jars or make autoclavable bags.
But how to glue or stick with bags and lids ?
Does high temperature breaks off the connection ?

I believe the standard technique for bonding the filter to the bag is to use some sort of epoxy. JB Weld comes to mind, but you might want to look into that further.

Will the US Postal Service ship envelopes to Europe??
I've heard of it used in kites, protective suits for painters, home 'wrap' insulation, envelopes and medical packaging.

Try a double layer of the envelope material.

Bonus--use the adhesive strip on the envelope to make patches to cover inoculation points!

so far i've had no problem with a single layer. is your concern contams or drying out? to prevent drying out, i only put a small (3/8 inch) hole in the lid. the hole is far off to one side of the lid so to inoc, i spin the lid to one side, inoc through the hole, then spin the hole back to the other side and tighten.

Or, use a two (2) hole lid, innoc in one & tape it over after innoc. 6T :tongue:

That's a great idea!! That actually works???? I didn't have a 3/8 bit. :frown:

Both. Thre 'dillo had 3 WBS jars that TOTALLY clumped up during PC'ing- couldn't even shake it loose. No lid- double layer Tyvek-covered in foil, PC'd for 60 mins. Never had that happen before he said.

yes, it seems to work fine. i reached 100% colonization last week and cased last weekend. 3/8 inch is an estimate. i used a nail to punch a hole in the metal inner lid then widened it with scissors and flattened the sharp edges. a drill or a hot piece of metal should work with plastic lids.

the jars were then filled 2/3 with soaked/drained birdseed, tyvek placed on mouth of jar, lid with hole screwed onto tyvek, foil wrapped on over lid and PC'ed.

after PC, waited for pressure to equalize, shook jars and returned them to PC to cool over night. great success on the first try.

i wondered if anyone else had done this. i have been doing it for months with no trouble.
super simple. i just use the tyvek and a band with no lid. the thin layer of uncolonized grain over the surface hasn't caused me any trouble, although i assume that if i were to cover some portion of the tyvek with tape i could minimize the drying....
also, don't incubate in a humid environment, as fungal organisms can colonize thru tyvek when moisture is present, and contams that grow outside move inside quickly... i feel i should also mention that if you thought you might incubate jars sideways, don't try it. at least with tyvek. the myc will come thru and get contamed, providing passage thru the tyvek for trich and the like.....

Do you mean, jars without lid just tyvek on the top with a band??

Anno's research indicated that fully exposed tyvek (no lid) tended to dry out during incubation. so i suggest a hole in the lid. the 3/8 inch hole i use seems to be about perfect.

Punch your hole and put a fabric No-Stick(teflon+gauze+whatever the medical eqivilant of Tyvek is+fabric)Band-aid over the hole.Like tyvek with adhesive that you can inoculate thru with a syringe,plus a teflon exposure surface inside the jar that your substrate won't stick to.They adhere well in a P/C @17psi for 2 hrs and are cheap and already sterile.Check MAIA's thread and my update on antibiotic pretreated pads on some.Believe me this is much easier than Tyvek or poly fill.Bon Chance WR
PS I have checked and they also work on oven cooking bags,next the seal-a-meal bags!

i think that would be too much air exchange, possibly achieving the same drying effect....
however, as i said, the tyvek with the just the metal band (Whiplash comes to mind) has worked fine for me...the quarts are usually done in a week or less... the drying is not so significant if the temp is not too high and one uses the jars in a timely fashion.
however, i am going with the band-aids in the near future....to check out my man white rasta's method.
