Practicality of kundalini, chakras, and even kriyas?
    #12026249 -

This is being posted here rather than the spirituality forum because I like to think of the above as more of a philosophy or way of describing something intangible rather than a metaphysical idea or place.

As in I feel that chakras are more about describing the general vibe, play of hormones, and mental response about the associated areas of our body and aren't really something to open by mysterious means. This is why many skeptics deny chakras, because they look for an item or something specific that can be studied independent of the whole relationship it's all about.

So then kundalini would be about getting all 6 senses and locations in order and being aware of the "self" or "I" and housing in the 7th chakra (sahasrara) rather than being attatched to the rest.

Am I missing something? I understand that people are able to have their own interpretations but it really confuses me when people associate kundalini awakenings with such a great deal of effort, agony, and almost a stroke like conclusion. I know that self-discovery is a challenging thing and that experiencing ego death can be excruciating but there are so many "standards" it's confusing.

Some will say just the spontaneous moment of awakening is it and that many people have had them. Some are all about extreme austerity and pushing themselves to the limits in isolation for months. Some go berserk and are still very kooky afterwards. Some swear by cultish rituals and even devotion.. etc..

I guess everyone has there own way but I'd like to hear different thoughts.

P.S. Seeing the topic title now I forgot to mention kriyas but that kind of goes with strange practices and isolation for "true awakening". I definitely dig Swami Satyananda Saraswati whose his ideas seem to more often be on the side of zen. The biggest book he wrote was A Systematic Course of Kriya and Yoga, which contains 36 lessons with the last 12 being initiation into kriya. Each lesson lasts a month and for the last year you add a new kriya every month until you finally are practicing the whole three hour ordeal. He recommends waiting until you have a period of your life where you can spare three hours solely for morning practice. THREE HOURS!! I might come around to it way in the future but now it makes me wonder what I'm going to be up to spending three hours every morning for a whole year and if it wont be counterproductive.

I feel like chakras can be treated as a psychological map/model.

But why do people spend so much energy looking for or completely dismissing them? Is it just another case of widespread error?

There are many distortions out there; some people haven't experienced anything resembling chakras and thus feel like they do not exist.

Dude, do you know what it is like to chant

"Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

A whole exhale motion

You feel your spine filling up with the kundalini energy, starting at the very bottom chakra

oooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

slowly rising

Ahhhhh, I just felt it hit number two!

oooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

Your spine is realigning now, slowly but surely

Up, up, up.....

Then.......

another breath

Ooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

slowly rising, creeping up the neck:

BOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your whole mind just EXPLODES!

shattered.

You open your eyes, time means nothing, and you have awaken from a dream.

That is what happened to me on my first acid trip, and afterwards I concluded that Kundalini was a quite natural phenomenon. It also seems to make a lot of sense to me that "Enlightenment" naturally follows balancing one's kundalini. and when it happens to you, you don't question it.

and when it happens to you, you don't question it.

I question everything that happens to me. To not question physical/psychological events leads often into erroneous conclusions about cause. See religious belief.:satansmoking:

Sorry friend, that's not what I meant. I questioned my revelation intensely, being a true skeptic to the core. But I could not avoid my experience. I mostly felt blessed, honestly.
I was a 100% atheist skeptic before LSD. now I lean towards a rather literal interpretation of buddhism, in particular the pursuit of freedom from egoic consciousness. It took something very powerful to change me.

however, to put what happened to me in words - this means nothing, friend. Truly nothing! to quote the lamest spiritual cop-out ever, one which I previously harbored scorn for, "You have to experience it for yourself."

Then you will nkow that Kundalini is a very real thing, and not just some metaphor

I can feel energy move up and down my spine whenever I consciously breath. I taught myself to feel this with simple relaxation exercises and full breathing. It seems that's because we have a nervous system that works that way. When tripping everything seems more pronounced and "cosmic" do to a differing mind set and ability to concentrate on the moment.

HI have browsed a few of your threads Icelander and it appears we have rather similar views actually. Read my thread on "death anxiety" (as you would call it) here and tell me what you think...

http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=389029&f=117

I guess the fundamental difference between us is that I "made the leap" of mysticism, although in all practicality it really has no effect. we are both living our lives now. we have both confronted our deaths, and we will both die. the rest is just labels. the chakra system is a pretty important label, though. I will let you know if I ever decide to throw it out the window - i need both more sober and more tripping experimentation though.

What I think is we most likely would not agree much on death anxiety.

But to make sure let me ask you this. When you physically die, what do you think will  happen? Will any part of you continue? What is that "part"?  How do you know?

Honestly? Well, prior to this experience, I had gone through death anxiety when i was like 11 years old. I broke down and cried when I realized that I wouldnt exist one day, dissolving into nothingness. I later realized, though, that this was a belief that I had become attached to, and I needed to destroy it.

I am not one who claims to have had a lengthy conversation with God where he reveals the secrets of the afterlife - I really do not know. The difference is that I can actually say, now, "I don't know!" and it's like a relief. Whatever happens I'm cool with it. LSD truly did help me overcome my death anxiety.

Will part of me continue? Wow, that is a hard question. I think I lean towards "yes", but that "part of me" might not even be the part of me that I call me! How's that for an answer lol?

This looks like classic death anxiety.

I don't know

To your credit. So death anxiety has possibly been lessened or gone underground. My belief along with Becker is that it never goes away completely and will always be a prime mover in our lives.

Maybe you'd like to read on it. Check out "Denial of Death" by Ernest Becker.

Are you familiar with the pineal gland? Many suspect it is the third eye chakra. Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland. I had been taking potassium iodide for several months prior to my acid trip to detox fluoride, and I feel like this might have been essential. One theory I have is that due to modern society the average person is literally somewhat retarded both physically and mentally due to media, poor diet, and toxins. It's kind of like a "all systems go" thing, after everything else is taken care of - and also the "first to get kicked" if there is inadequate nutrition - due to its lack of necessity for survival. Our bodies struggle to combat the stresses of modern life. Our spirituality can only thrive when our bodies have been given the proper materials and conditions to develop them. In this way, I feel like modern society is the greatest lie ever. Spirituality has been replaced by profit and convenience. The price of society is our souls - our true nature - swept  under the rug and ignored.

Therefore, I tend to believe that, even if I myself fail to experience it in my sober life - although I do intend to pursue sober spiritual practices once I start college - that things we now CONSIDER mystical were once quite readily accessible and natural to our ancestors. What makes something mystical anyhow? If none of us could see, and one day someone grew an eye and started seeing things, that would be considered incredibly mystical and no one would believe that it could possibly be true. I believe in a spiritual path that is physical as well as mental.

I don't know about that man. Flouride is no good for some types but it doesn't just start crustin' up on your pineal. At worst it might screw with some metabolic processes. So I think that if any part of our society is doing bad it's not exactly due to flouride and not even ultimately due to poor diet (even though it does slow down the brain). Society has been bitched about since the ancient times and while some of it is valid, a lot of it is assumption because you don't really know what's going on in each person's mind and there is no one actual "society" or being of society.

And about metaphysics experiences, I think it's just decoraction. Like Icelander, I've had spinal sensations and if they are acommpanied by a vision or a sensation of a cosmic body I think that's just decoration. This doesn't make it less valid or unimportant but the image or thought isn't my focus. The fact that whatever happened is more important to me. Especially because I'll never know if I have a secondary spiritual body or not, so I feel that all I can really do is acknowledge it and move on.
