Zen and Kundalini
    #3251128 - 10/19/04 12:51 PM (17 years, 9 days ago)

Hi, after a long search, I have finally started practicing Zen.  I have been studying and practicing with the help of a nearby monastery for just over 2 months.  I was wondering if anybody sees a problem practicing Zazen in the mornings (everyday, 30 minutes) and practicing Kundalini Yoga at night.  That way, I can work on both my mind and body.  Since both seem to be about opening up perceptions, I thought they may have a complimentary effect.  Or is it better to use all my time for one practice?

Peace

How do you practice Zen for 30 minutes?
You mean meditate right..
haha i'm just giving you a hard time.
Go for it, i'm sure with discipline and stick-to-it-ness, it will be very rewarding.

The thing is, one of the monks I met with made a very interesting point:
Zen is not what is traditionally referred to as meditation.  It is the process of increasing awareness, through the body-mind.  Openning all the senses at once.

Yoga is about single pointedness of mind, increasing focus on a particular Chakra.  Although, through practice, the senses are opened up, allowing one to feel more at once.

This is where I feel they will compliment each other.  Zen for overall awareness, Kundalini for increasing the individual senses.  I feel that having increased sensory perception, will fuel the Zen practice.  My only real concern is about them bleeding into each other, creating something that is neither Zen, or Kundalini.

Peace

real zen is never duplicated, all unique moments are like synthesis but nothing added.

the K.Yoga is of value - well yoga in general is of value - K.Yoga is already somebody's synthesis.

zen is like vipassana meditation from southern buddhism.
but you don't need extra concepts at this time, you go for the root of the moment and allow bare attention to concepts arizing and passing as for any of the sensations without distinction.
(during your work - no affectation is required in regular life)

Yea i always thought of zen as a transparent, universal, state of living and "being", which transcends culture and symbols.

I am not sure I totally understand.  You say Yoga is of value, is that relative to Zen, or simply in its own right?  I guess all I have to do is keep them separate. So it is OK to practice both?

Peace

ok to practice both yes.
yoga is of value for health - circulation etc.
some K-Yoga is a bit goofy but still OK and OK to mix.

some roshis make the zen group do yoga or calisthenics between meditation
