Quickest ways to train for the wickedest flexibility and body strength. (Long term TEK)
    #11884282 -

Okay, what I hope to do with this topic is combine all of the most useful and easy techniques we can find to train our bodys to become more conditioned at any time rather than just in a certain training setting. You see, I definitely have been enjoying yoga and have loved to do strength training for a long time but what I would really like is to incorporate little things you can do in your spare time to supplement all of this without overtraining.

For a quick example: Instead of just sitting down to read a book, Bruce Lee would stand up and rest a leg on the top of something like the back of a chair to keep his legs limber.

So if anyone is willing to help, I think it would be great to come up with and organize a whole bunch of things we can effortlessly do supplement the rest of our work.

To start, here are a bunch of sources.

Two books on capoeria, a form of dance & martial arts that requires a lot of flexibility, grace, and core strength:

Probably the best book I found on stretching and yoga is "Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha" by Swami Satyananda Saraswati but I'm unsure how to upload books w/o taking a picture of each page. That Iyengar one sucks IMO but it's better than nothing.

So what do you think? Do you think it's possible to significantly shorten the time it takes to master the more difficult asanas by tossing in certain things throughout the day? Or is it best to let the body rest completely during off time?

Another thing I'd like to consider is remembering to practice bandhas ("locks" which strenghten specific unused muscles), mudras (the ones I'm thinking of are like kegels), and pranayama (breath technique) far more often since they don't require you to even move very much.

There is no "quick" way to train.

What you put in is what you get out. If you have good nutrition, stretch everyday and workout on a constant schedule that CHALLENGES you then that would be the "quickest" way to train..

Are you looking for ways to do this? Because there are already tons of ways to get strong, just different ways to do it.

No, this is about supplementing. I already have a weight training program, a bit of a gymnastics routine, and do yoga/pranayama/meditation daily. But then there are times when I'm not really up to anything that make me think "Why not just train some now?". Like instead of just sitting on the couch and watching a movie, why not get on the ground and spread your legs so the tendon has more time to stretch rather than just during the yoga routine? Or even stand up and balance on one leg so your balance has more time to develop? Just don't disturb everybody and be "that guy".

You know what I mean? I think that you could greatly deepen your main practices by utilizing more free time to practice a little. Maybe I'm just impatient but I'd be more able to concentrate during yoga by getting better at certain asanas. And this isn't limited to just yoga.

Okay I see what your asking now.

It's called active recovery, and LIGHT training is GREAT for off days, but don't over do it. You want to get your body going and pumping, but you don't want to make it even close to a full work out

Personally I do light cardio jogs on my off days and lots of stretching and a little core work. It will decrease your recovery time assuming you have sufficient nutrition

Yeah, that's what I'm asking for. Do you mind describing what you do on your off days?

Satyananda Saraswati describes a lot of very useful ones but it's just hard to remember them. It takes time to read, reread, and digest. Then it takes even longer to finally incorporate everything. Like I always forget about the simple quad stretch

But when I remember to do it, it helps out so much. So I figure than I can try to root out the best things to do, sort out what/how they help, and share/discuss them with everyone else's ideas.

Well I stretch every muscle in my body and that normally takes about 7 minutes or so. After that I do explosive jumping jacks for roughly 30 seconds to get the heart rate up and the blood pumpin good. Shortly after I'll go for a 3-4 mile light jog and then on the way back home I go through a park where I do L leg lifts on the monkey bars and I jog back to the apartments, after I run up the stairs and get inside I'll do some crunches and laying flat and lifting my legs up to an L position again and then I'll get up and do a few squats and a few pushups. Nothing to really WORK the body but enough to say good morning and wake them up

Or maybe faster?!

Work out in a pool... It is the fastest way

Half an hour of aqua-gym is the equivalent of one hour spend at the gym and helps you lose 500 calories.

Running 30min in a pool is equal to 2 hours running on land, with out any of the stress on your joints....

Just do kettlebell snatches. You don't need a pool and it will burn way more calories. I have recorded over 800 calories in a 20 minute session of snatch intervals.

 What do we look like, old grannies?

Besides, you won't build muscle in a pool.

Flexibility = Yoga

That shit is hard as fuck.  If you can find a rip on a torrent site the Yoga-X from P90X is fucking insane man.  My first time doing it, already a conditioned athlete, I was winded and sweating by the first 45 min.

If you want to build mass, high weight and low reps.  Feed your body the material to grow muscle, i.e. 1.5 grams of protein per lb of body weight.

Thanks for all of your input but all of that is exactly what I didn't want in this topic.

What I wanted was things to keep in mind to train throughout the day without overtraining. I was going to put up a whole bunch of things a few days back but I've been really busy and still have like three weeks of homework to do.

Another quick example would be: The gracious pose is an asana used to open up the hips and make you really horny if you do the moola bandha (clench perinium) and vajroli mudra (flex dickular area), but it's kind of difficult. So instead of spending a few minutes on that during a yoga routine (if you can't do it right it's easy to hurt your knees), improve it by doing it whenever you're just sitting, BUT rest your weight on your hands. This way there is far less strain and the body can get accustomed to opening that way.

See that? He's sitting his ass on the floor with his feet behind his back. That's the final position and it takes a lot of time for the legs to accomodate that.
