Re: Has Anyone Cast off Their Beliefs? [Re: Freedom]

I feel like there's a part of my mind that is this manic story telling machine. Its only purpose is to take the facts (always incomplete) and assemble them into some sort of easy to understand story that fits with the belief system I was randomly assigned. It does this without the 'I' having any input.

Nailed, I have a thread (that's derailed of course) on this very subject on the boards right now.

As I said in the post above I think it's fear. We are culture and so belong. Outside of that is the unknown. Nobody wants to go it alone. Think about the ramifications. No chance for relationships.

it seems that other than psychotic people, it is always the unknown where imagination creates delusional beliefs.

but its not just for social reasons, people have all sorts of delusional beliefs about each other on a personal level - for example they make up reasons why someone behaves a certain way, or form beliefs about the persons status, wealth etc.

Sometimes it seems we make up beliefs in an effort to justify our feelings. It's like the story telling machine takes advantage of the fact that there is incomplete knowledge and fills the gap to solidify our emotional stance.

All those crazy beliefs we have about each other are accounted for and part of the culture. Ever wonder why humans seem so irrational and get away with it?

No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda
