How is anyone paying for College and University anymore?
    #11661008 -

Scholarships rarely exist for anyone who is white middle class and the fact that I am male and have no birth defects or handicaps does not help either...  I am getting great grades, but not excellent.  Therefore only a handful of scholarships exist for me...

Loans are now a total pain.  My first year I was able to get my loans no problem at favorable rates.  Now all loans including the federal ones are starting to require a co-signer, something that most parents (if they are financially wise) do not want to do...

So now I have these rising tuition costs, rising costs of everyday food items, little work available for me, and bills that are piling up on myself and my parents.

Any recommendations?  Is anyone else in a similar situation? What are you doing to fund school?

Well I am black and I had to get through my undergrad on loans and working my ass off.  Not all of us minorities are just coasting through!

I suggest you get some loans, get your parents to co-sign if possible.  Other than that, get a damn job!  I had to take a total of 3 semesters off during my undergrad to work to build money to pay for another semester.  You can surely do the same.  It is tough, but not impossible.

I don't go. If enough people were to stop paying the big dog, he might start considering that somethings wrong. Hand him money and everythings okay in his eyes. I make just under 21k a year. Guess what.. I'm too rich to get any sort of financial aid. I make more money than my mom does. My moms credit is fucked. Its been fucked for years. Another 5 or 6 years from now, she should be able to co sign for me. My credit is bad. I have hospital bills on my credit that everyone says does not hurt. Well guess what. It fucking does. I have just under 610 FICO score. I can't even get a $500 credit card. I don't own a vehicle. They wanted to charge me 18% interest. So I walked out on him. I've never been late on any bills, but that doesn't matter. The only time it matters is if you don't pay them at all. (Rent, renters insurance, elec, water, trash, gas). I can't get food stamps. I make too much money to get any living assistance. Its rediculous. Apparently if you make $10 an hour, you won't get very far.

I just hope my investments work out for the better.

I went to school one semester because my father said he would pay for it. Guess what? He didn't. Now that's about  $2k on my credit that apparently I never paid. I don't live lavishly at all. I don't even have internet at my house currently. I stopped paying the bill. Just have rent, food, water, elec, rent ins, and gas and cell phone. My cell phone is my splurge. I have the internet on it. I'm big ballin now.

Student loans + be a TA or work for the university.

My fafsa pays for tuition, and my TA stipend (which wouold typically just cover tuition) now pays for living expenses.

It's not easy, but it is doable. Before graduating I found lists of 100's of scholarships that I could apply for. I narrowed down my search to scholarships that either pertained to my major, or were local. Then I just spent time writing essays. I was able to adapt one generic essay for multiple applications. The way I saw it was that a few hours of work each week was worth the $1000+ payoff. I ended up receiving a scholarship from my university for grades, and a scholarship from an organization that supports people going into the STEM fields.

Oh and I am white, my father owns his own business etc, so I wasn't getting any need based grants.

You just need to look harder, and try more. Money is out there, you just have to actually want to find it.

Good luck!

This. I'm white as snow, come from a well-off family, and haven't paid anything outside of fees that scholarships won't cover for my bachelor's or master's degrees.

Well, I graduated with a 3.8 - got nearly all As in all classes required for my major - participated in undergraduate research - tutored and TAd the lower classes, and I got denied each and every scholarship I applied for (of the few that white males are allowed to apply for).  I even got denied a funded research position that a girl with worse grades than me got.

Thankfully I was able to get student loans and pell grants since my family makes no money, and those arnt race based.  I think the Pell Grant is pretty easy to get for most people who need it.

College was the biggest mistake of my life, it was a total waste of time and money. I would definitely not go to college if I had to do it over again.

People pay with loans,  credit allows people to bid the price higher especially with low interest rates.

I'm white, middle class. Luckily I got really good grades in high school. I have a scholarship from my school that pays 1/3rd of the tuition every year. I had to take out one student loan. It was small so I'm not going to be in debt to my eyeballs, I got a govt. grant, I work summer jobs, and my parents are helping a bit. I should graduate with less than $10,000 in debt.

Here is an interesting lecture on tuition and how government loans allow schools to raise tuition without fear of free market forces.

I wouldn't call plumbers a social underclass, not at the rates they charge these days, fuck tradeschool anywho, you're not gonna get a better experience than doing an apprenticeship - though probably less of those around these days. Many experienced plubmers i've met seem to live the high life and live in nicer houses than their university educated counterparts.

I went to university, had a scholarship which basically paid for the first year. One year i paid with a loan, and the rest i paid out of my own pocket from working summer break. I was however, from a poor enough family to get some welfare assistance, upon which i was able to pay rent and not much more - but it all helped.

I retrospect, i wish i did a trade or something that would actually lead to some job security. But alas i'm a philosophy grad with a diploma in Software Development and competition is high and rough for jobs atm, and where i live programmers have devalued by about half in this 'recession' in terms of jobs and pay.

In saying that, i do intend that if i do earn enough to put much aside for my future kids education.

The loan system has indeed pushed fees up ridiculously in the last 10 years here, fee only cover lectures/tutorials.
(anything else: materials, books, printouts... require money in your pocket, or another loan(

Don't buy your books and materials from university libraries and shops either, unless you enjoy paying 30 - 50% more than what you can get online or from a shop in town.
