fractional sterilization success story! (well, not really)
    #11615490 -

well i made 4 half pint jars of WBS and did fractional sterilization. (steam 1 hour, wait a day, steam 1 hour, wait a day, steam one hour, wait until cool, inoculate) and i lost 3 of the jars early, however i've got one champion  was at about 30 percent today so i shook it

fractional sterilization works.... just not very well... at all

One must be very careful calling a 75% failure rate prior to full colonization a 'success story'.  With a pressure cooker, one can attain a 99.9% or better success rate.  I can think of no other tool of the trade which has such a high payoff.

the "success story" was sort of meant to be sarcasm
and yes i know there's now replacement for a PC; however, sadly its not within my budget.
I'm aware 75% failure is not a success story. I was pumped that one jar made it through like a champ so i had to share

How did you rinse the grains? Just water? Or with a drop of soap?
I bet a good washing would get you up to 33%.

Ok, then in all seriousness;
Rinse with soap next time, then use clear water until the soap is gone.
You might even pour in enough peroxide to cover them- not so much for killing things, but to fizz up and break the bacteria and spores loose so you can rinse them away cleanly.
The cleaner your initial product is, the better your results will be.

Also, go find a PC in a thrift store or get one for free from somebody.

Not surprising that you failed using such short times. I have pointed out many times that the tek on this site for FS is utterly useless, it COMPLETELY misses the point that people think is obvious for PC'ing. Namely that it takes a long time for the core of grains in the middle of a jar to reach temp.

The tek is transcribed direct from textbooks, the very same textbooks would tell you to PC for maybe 15-20mins, but everybody knows & accepts that this is not long enough, but for some very odd reason they cannot apply the same logic to FS. Its no wonder FS gets such a bad name, if people followed textbook advice for PC's they would have a bad name too.

When PCing it takes time to reach pressure, and time to cool down from 15psi. Many peoples jars could be subjected to steam for longer than people are doing these half assed attempts of FS. i.e. it could take 20mins to reach 15psi, and 20mins to come down to 0psi, so exposed to 40mins at 100C+ yet people will steam jars of cold grain for 30min intervals, it beggars belief. 60mins was used above, not nearly enough. The additional PC'ing time is worked out empirically by people, i.e. with a normal PC and stove it is being heated for all that time before it reaches 15psi.

It pisses me off to see so much time & effort & grains wasted by half assed attempts. Then it further discourages people from trying it out.

instead of fractional sterilization, if you can't afford a PC, just sterilize your grains on venus. the psi there is like 1300 or something like that.

A small PC can be had for $20 at walmart.  If you can't afford that then how are you affording all the other supplies which add up to well more than $20?

Even when you get into the hobby it's still nice to have a small PC for small loads.

It's a lot faster and cheaper to fire up a small PC and unless you're really good at planning you'll probably find lots of times you'll want to run a small fast load rather than wait for a huge PC just to do one syringe or a small tool.

Search amazon.com for presta pressure cookers. They are large and inexpensive, and guess what, work! I think the AA cookers are overkill for those not obsessed with the hobby.

1) buy the jiggler.
2) because it won't work.
