Fractional sterilization?
    #3747377 - 02/07/05 09:42 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

As soon as I get the money, I'm going to buy a cheapo PC, but until that time comes, Im going to start this grow. Does this fractional sterilization actually work for grains?

Wait until you can get the pressure cooker, frac. sterilization of grains is not reliable.

Will this pressure cooker be good enough? Will I be able to adjust the psi on this one? If it works Ill get it!  :rasta:

That thing is WAY too small. Mine is 18 quarts and holds 7 1-quart jars.

Yeah that cooker will work, you don't need a behemoth pressure cooker. I used a Mirro 4 qt. for years and it worked great. If everything doesn't fit in one run though, you'll have to wait for another batch to cook through-that's the difference between large and small cookers.

Yeah, Diver is correct in that it WILL work. The question then becomes how long do you want to spend cooking up jars? If you're doing any decent sized grows you'll be cooking for quite a while with a 4-quart.

I should be doing a fair size for a somewhat inexperienced grower, but I dont mind spending the extra time, i think. Can i set the psi on that thing or do i just have to adjust the times for cooking to the psi it is set on?

You adjust the heat on your stove. Put it on the highest setting until you reach 15 psi and lower it if it starts to go over.

BTW it is really going to come down to whether I should get a heater for my incubator (tub in tub incubator) or a PC. Which would be more beneficial? If i don't do that type of incubator, what kind can I do to keep my jars and optimal temps ?? Thanks!!

Ahhh ... you really need both. Unless you have a heating pad or something to use for incubation you'll be looking at very very long colonization times. I'd say the PC is more important because you could put the jars near the radiator or something. Just don't expect great results without both an incubator and a pressure cooker.

Actually on second thought ... go with the heater and do the PF tek. By the time that grow is through I'm sure you will have had enough time to save for even the cheapest PC. If I were you I'd do PF tek and save up for a bigger PC, like an 18 quart. They're only 70 bucks at walmart. Yeah, I know, you probably don't want to spend that much but in the long run it's well worth it.

I've been using my mirror 4quart for the last year. It works great, just takes alittle patience. Look on ebay for a good used AA.

Meh. It will work. It looks similar to mine, which is a 4.5 qt. The only problem is that you will need to do multiple batches...could be a pain. Make sure it goes up to 15 PSI (or at least 13).

Just keep in mind that if it only goes to 13 you need to adjust PC time accordingly (sp?).

For grain steralization a PC that can cook at 15psi's min. is required. PC If your going to go with the PF tech
[brown rice flour and vermiculite], you can use a cheaper 7.5-10psi PC. I owne small .55\bar PC, which I think is 7.5psi's, and I have had 0% contams. I do make sure that I increase my sterlization time from the recomended 60mins to 1.5h-2h. The only time I have gotten contams was during inoculation when I was shaky and the tip of needle touched the cover. I also case using a crumbled colnized cake, and placing the crumbled cake material in a pie pan [that has a thin layer of vermiculite on the bottom], then a 1/2in of moist vermiculite spreaded evenly on the top, it is then covered with cling wrap, then placed back in the incubator until the mycelium starts to poke out of top, all over. The pan is then placed in the fruiting chamber to allow the magic of pinning to begin. The PF Tech. is great for beginners, such as myself. I also love that the cakes can be used for easy caseing!

I have now aquired 5 differen't P. Cubensis varities.

--Cambodean-- (vendor checked out and is well knowen by many here and at other fourms)

--Mexi-Cub-- (Again Vendor is well knowen)
--Thiland Pink Bufflo-- (vendor is well knowen)
--Hawiian Strain
--Origional PF-tech strain

Fractional sterilization does indeed work, and is reliable. Jars must be cooked for 1.5 hours each day for 3 days in a row (half-pints). A friend had nearly 100% success with this method the entire time he grew using grains...

But save yourself all that work and get a PC. No less than 15 psi...
I can't imagine cooking the SAME jars three times just to make spawn...

Oh my god. If I cooked 3 times as many jars as I do now, I'd be up to my friggen eyeballs in rye.

I think he meant cooking the same jars 3 times...

I am curious to know if one could use fractional sterilization for agar. I may try it just for the heck of it. I know it works for grain spawn when cooked properly. A pressure cooker is not always readily available, and anything you can do to make mushroom growing cheaper, is better for those that could benefit from them as a source of food.

Mushrooms grown on waste crop materials could easily help under-developed countries... But that is a different story...
