Anyone have experience with fractional sterilization?
    #2452043 - 03/19/04 05:42 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all--

After a 1 year hiatus, I'm thinking about getting a new project underway and wanted to give grains a try. I don't have access to a pressure cooker and as such, am wondering if anyone has experience with the fractional sterilization method outlined in the FAQ (or any other FS tek for that matter). Does this procedure require a modification of the typical grain recipes? What particular grains were used etc. Is it worth my time trying grains without a PC or should I just go back to BRF cakes? Also, because the grains are shaken to encourage rapid colonization, is it ok to use less liquid innoculant than one would with cakes?

Also, since I've never tried casing I was gonna give it a go regardless of whether I end up using BRF cakes or grain. Just ooc, though, is it possible to fruit off of "grain cakes?"

The general concensus is taht pressure cookers are a must with grains. I wouldn't try it. As far as grain cakes are concerned, they don't have the moisture in them to support that kind of growth. If it were to fruit, the weight of the shroom would probably rip the grains it was attatched to right off. But try casing some PF cakes....it works wonders!

I know conventional wisdom says use a pressure cooker, however the fractional sterilization technique seems viable (based on my moderate knowledge of microbiology). Has anyone actually tested it though?

100% failure on every attempt on popcorn.

Get a pressure cooker if you want to work with it.

defintiely can't do grain with fractional sterilization... Many have had success with fractional sterilization of BRF though, give it a shot.
